Why Does Princess Charlotte Only Ever Wear Dresses?

Princess Char­lotte is a style icon in her own right, and prob­a­bly has the cutest wardrobe imaginable. Her clear-cut style and out­fit choices set trends, and the cloth­ing she wears tends to sell out in sec­onds. But there’s one odd thing that we’ve no­ticed about this roy­al’s style that’s per­plexed us — the fact that Char­lotte has never been spot­ted at a pub­lic out­ing wear­ing shorts or pants.

The three-year-old has been photographed thou­sands of times in dif­fer­ent out­fits, and not once has she been spot­ted don­ning some­thing other than a dress or skirt, even in chilly weather. Surely there are plenty of styl­ish pants and cute shorts that Char­lotte could don, right? So we can’t help but won­der, is this royal pro­to­col, or just Kate Mid­dle­ton’s per­sonal style pref­er­ence?

Well, we’ve done our re­search, and we can con­firm that there are no royal rules about girls not be­ing al­lowed to wear trousers per se, al­though it does seem to be tra­di­tion for them to wear dresses in pub­lic. Old pho­tos of the roy­als as chil­dren, like Princess Anne and Queen Eliz­a­beth II, con­firm this with their fea­ture of smocked dresses and bon­nets. Mean­while, the young men were al­ways dressed in shorts, while trousers were re­served for teenagers and men.

So if it’s not royal pro­to­col, then the choice for Char­lotte to wear only dresses when she’s in pub­lic must sim­ply be for­mal­ity. Com­pared to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who are a less tra­di­tional in their ap­proach to royal life, Prince William and Kate are much more con­form­ing, and their chil­dren’s fash­ion sense con­firms this.

In ad­di­tion to this pref­er­ence, Kate likes to dress Char­lotte in match­ing, color-co­or­di­nated out­fits — think a blue dress teamed with a match­ing bow clip and dainty blue shoes. Mother and daugh­ter have even been known to dress like twins on oc­ca­sion, some­thing which sparked the “mini me” dress­ing trend.

We have to point out that Char­lotte was spot­ted wear­ing shorts once, when she was play­ing with her brother George, but this was­n’t nec­es­sar­ily deemed a pub­lic out­ing. This leads us to be­lieve that when in the con­fines of her own home, Char­lotte is free to wear all the trousers, shorts, and leg­gings that her heart de­sires. Phew.
