Why Does Princess Charlotte Only Ever Wear Dresses?
Princess Charlotte is a style icon in her own right, and probably has the cutest wardrobe imaginable. Her clear-cut style and outfit choices set trends, and the clothing she wears tends to sell out in seconds. But there’s one odd thing that we’ve noticed about this royal’s style that’s perplexed us — the fact that Charlotte has never been spotted at a public outing wearing shorts or pants.
The three-year-old has been photographed thousands of times in different outfits, and not once has she been spotted donning something other than a dress or skirt, even in chilly weather. Surely there are plenty of stylish pants and cute shorts that Charlotte could don, right? So we can’t help but wonder, is this royal protocol, or just Kate Middleton’s personal style preference?
Well, we’ve done our research, and we can confirm that there are no royal rules about girls not being allowed to wear trousers per se, although it does seem to be tradition for them to wear dresses in public. Old photos of the royals as children, like Princess Anne and Queen Elizabeth II, confirm this with their feature of smocked dresses and bonnets. Meanwhile, the young men were always dressed in shorts, while trousers were reserved for teenagers and men.
So if it’s not royal protocol, then the choice for Charlotte to wear only dresses when she’s in public must simply be formality. Compared to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who are a less traditional in their approach to royal life, Prince William and Kate are much more conforming, and their children’s fashion sense confirms this.
In addition to this preference, Kate likes to dress Charlotte in matching, color-coordinated outfits — think a blue dress teamed with a matching bow clip and dainty blue shoes. Mother and daughter have even been known to dress like twins on occasion, something which sparked the “mini me” dressing trend.
We have to point out that Charlotte was spotted wearing shorts once, when she was playing with her brother George, but this wasn’t necessarily deemed a public outing. This leads us to believe that when in the confines of her own home, Charlotte is free to wear all the trousers, shorts, and leggings that her heart desires. Phew.
