William and Kate Are Making a Conscious Effort to Not Tell George That He’ll Be King One Day

Though Queen Elizabeth will always be queen of our hearts, it’s a sad reality that someday, someone else will sit on her throne. Royal protocol dictates that Prince Charles is next in line, followed by Prince William, and then Prince George. Though it’s possible — and very likely — that Prince George will one day be king, his father and mother aren’t in any rush to tell him. Why? Because they want to give him as normal an upbringing as possible.

“There’ll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in, in the world,” Prince William revealed in a previous interview. Until that time, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are determined to shelter George and his siblings, Charlotte and Louis, as much as possible so they can enjoy their early years.

Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, grew up in the royal spotlight, and that took a toll on the siblings, according to Catherine Mayer, author of Charles: The Heart of a King. “With George they are trying to delay that moment of realization and give him normality before they thrust this on him,” Mayer told E! News in 2015. “But it will be, nevertheless, part of his upbringing both in terms of what he sees his parents and grandparents doing and probably quite soon a beginning of an understanding that he is in public life and what that means.”

Though the Cambridge kids will never have a totally “normal” childhood, their parents have done an amazing job trying to shield them as much as possible. In time, the duke and duchess will have to find a way to break the news to their son and prepare him for his future, but that time isn’t here yet. From what we’ve seen so far, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are well-adjusted, happy children. And right now, that’s all Kate and William can ask for.
