These 7 Behind-the-Scenes ‘Miami Vice’ Photos Are ‘80s Glam—Featuring Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith
From sunglasses to surprise guest stars, these photos bring 1980s Miami back to life!
Nothing says ’80s quite like the hit crime drama Miami Vice. Between the music, hair, clothes and hunky leads that Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas brought to life, it’s no wonder why this show remains culturally impactful to this day. Johnson portrayed James “Sonny” Crockett while Thomas brought to life Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two undercover detectives working for the Miami Police Department. During their time as a part of the force, they went head to head with dozens of dangerous criminals against the backdrop of sunny 1980s Miami. Whether you tuned in episode after episode for the fashion, thrill or drama, the series remains an ‘80s classic. Here, a look behind the scenes at the show we love.
Love on set

When it comes to on-again, off-again couples, no one did it quite like Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. The duo married in 1976, divorced after six months, and years later, in 1989, would remarry again. Soon after, they welcomed a daughter, who went on to become an accomplished actress as well, Dakota Johnson. Here, Griffith is pictured alongside Johnson on set, as she appeared as a guest star on the show.
Sauve behind-the-scenes

Here, Phillip Michael Thomas looks cool as can be in shiny shades on the set of Miami Vice. Outside of acting, Thomas is also a musician, and after he said goodbye to his Miami Vice character, he pursued another career avenue. He became the face of the Philip Michael Thomas International Psychic Network, which connected callers with over-the-phone psychic services.
Don calling the shots

Here, Don Johnson looks confident as can be on the set of the show he starred in. Over the years, he’s stepped behind the camera in a variety of projects he worked on.
Quite the pair!

Over the years, Miami Vice welcomed countless guest stars, one of the most notable being Willie Nelson himself! He appeared in a 1986 episode as a lawman involved in a drug deal. Over the years, countless Hollywood stars made appearances on this show, including Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson, Gene Simmons and more!
All smiles

Edward James Olmos brought to life the character of Martin Castillo, a fellow officer on the force, while Rosalind Chao played the part of May Ying, Castillo’s ex-wife, who finds herself swept up in a plot involving a dangerous drug lord.
Quite the trio

Now that’s quite the crew! Another special guest star on the show was none other than famed musician Miles Davis, who made an appearance in the show’s second season. In the episode, he portrayed the character of Ivory Jones, a pimp and nightclub owner.
Cozy off-camera

During her time on Miami Vice, Melanie Griffith played the part of Christine, a businesswoman who captures the affections of Sonny—similar to how she did in real life! After she and Johnson went their separate ways, she went on to marry actor Antonio Banderas.
