‘1883’ family tree
James Dutton

In 1883, James Dutton was portrayed by Tim McGraw and served as one of the founders of the Dutton Ranch. After fighting on the Confederate side of the Civil War, James decides to leave his Tennessee life behind and travel via wagon to Montana, where he will eventually found the beloved Yellowstone ranch.
He’s married to Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) and has three kids named Elsa (Isabel May), John (James Badge Dale) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar). He is also the brother of Claire Dutton (Dawn Olivieri) and Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and the uncle of Mary Abel (Emma Malouff).
James was sadly shot and killed in the year 1893, meaning he can never appear in 1923.
Margaret Dutton

As the wife of James Dutton, Margaret joined him in 1883 on his journey from Tennessee to Montana. At the beginning of the trip, Margaret does have two children—John and Elsa—and once they arrive in Montana, she gives birth to her third and final child, Spencer, who is one of the 1923 stars.
Margaret died from hypothermia in 1894, so 1923 isn’t in her future.
Elsa Dutton

As the oldest original Dutton child, Elsa has her work cut out for her during her family’s trip across the country, especially regarding her heart.
Originally, Elsa was all set to marry a man named Ennis (Eric Nelsen), but after a group of bandits kills him, she is forced to change course and falls in love with a Native American named Sam (Martin Sensmeier). Quickly after that, though, Elsa is shot and killed, denying her and Sam a happily ever after.
Elsa is buried at the Dutton Ranch in Montana and often has voiceovers in both 1923 and Yellowstone.
Claire Dutton

James’ sister Claire is one of the few people to join in on the journey from Tennessee to Montana, but along the way, she loses her daughter and decides to end her life as well.
Prior to her death, Claire had seven children with her husband, Henry, one of whom lived to adulthood.
Mary Abel

Mary Abel was Claire and Henry’s only child to become an adult, but on the way to Montana, she is murdered by a couple of gang members in Fort Worth, Texas.

Jacob Dutton

Jacob Dutton and his wife, Cara (Helen Mirren), take over the Dutton Ranch after the tragic death of James. In doing so, they also gain a lot of knowledge about the lives of their nieces and nephews, which is great for them as they have no children of their own.
Aside from being Cara’s husband, Jacob is James and Claire’s brother and Elsa, Mary Abel, Spencer and John’s uncle, though he only ever interacts with the latter two. He’s also the great-uncle of Jack Dutton (Darren Mann).
Jacob is one of 1923’s lead characters but has never appeared in 1883 or Yellowstone, meaning viewers never saw him with his brother or sister.
Cara Dutton

As the wife of Jacob, Cara serves as the ranch’s prime matriarch, but don’t let that title fool you: She’s just as brave, strong and determined as her husband.
Cara has no children, but does form a special bond with her great-niece-in-law, Elizabeth Dutton (Michelle Randolph), during Season 1 of 1923.
Similar to James, Cara doesn’t appear in 1883 or Yellowstone, but is one of 1923’s main characters.
John Dutton Sr.

John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) is the middle child of James and Margaret. However, his character didn’t have a role in the story until 1923. He is married to Emma (Marley Shelton), has a son named Jack and can be found throughout Season 1 helping his uncle Jacob manage matters around their Montana ranch.
John was tragically killed by the then Dutton family’s enemy, Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), in Season 1 of 1923 and never appeared in Yellowstone.
Emma Dutton

Emma Dutton is the wife of John Sr., Jack’s mother and Elizabeth’s mother-in-law. She appears in Season 1 of 1923 and can often be found hanging out around the ranch.
That is, until her husband dies, and Emma decides to end her own life as well.
Emma did not appear in 1883 or Yellowstone.
Spencer Dutton

Spencer Dutton, aka “The Lion Hunter,” is the youngest son of James and Margaret, and while he appeared in 1883, he wasn’t a main character, and wasn’t played by Sklenar.
In Season 1 of 1923, since he was in Africa, where he falls in love with Alexandra of Sussex (Julia Schlaepfer) and then in Season 2, he reunites with his Uncle Jacob, Aunt Cara and wife Alex, who then gives birth to their son John II.
Spencer is not in Yellowstone.
Alexandra Dutton

Alexandra joined the Dutton family after marrying Spencer in Season 1. She then met some of her in-laws during the Season 2 finale, but never actually made it to the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch because she died from frostbite right after giving birth to baby John II.
Jack Dutton

Jack is the only son of John Sr. and Emma Dutton and lived at the Montana ranch with his wife, Elizabeth. He tragically died at the end of Season 2, leaving behind his pregnant wife.
Jack was not in 1883 or Yellowstone.
Elizabeth Dutton

After marrying Jack in Season 1, Elizabeth became an official Montana-based Dutton, often hanging out with her great-aunt-in-law Cara. At the end of Season 2, she did leave the ranch and was pregnant with Jack’s child, but we don’t know what gender it is or if it will be raised in Montana.
Patience Dutton
There isn’t a whole lot we know about Patience Dutton; we do know that she is buried on the ranch and has the year 1931 on her headstone. That’s why we put her on the 1923 family tree, because chances are she’s the child of someone on the hit prequel show.
‘Yellowstone’ family tree
John Dutton II

Appearing in flashback episodes of Yellowstone, John is believed to be the son of Alexandra and Spencer. He is also the dad of John III (Kevin Costner) and grandfather to Lee (Dave Annable), Jamie (Wes Bentley), Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) Dutton.
John did appear in 1923, after Alexandra gave birth; however, he was hardly seen given the fact that he was a newborn.
John Dutton III

John the Third is the first ever Dutton patriarch that we meet, and boy, was his time on the ranch messy. Aside from being elected governor in Season 5, he had four kids—Lee, Jamie, Beth and Kayce—with his late wife Evelyn and several grandchildren.
Evelyn tragically died in a horseback-riding accident in 1997, but she does appear in a few flashback episodes of Yellowstone. Neither she nor her husband has appeared in the prequel shows.
Lee Dutton
Lee is the oldest child of John the Third and Evelyn, and while he might have been killed off in the Yellowstone pilot due to an unfortunate cattle rescue gone wrong, he is still talked about by his family a lot.
Lee has not appeared in either prequel show.
Jamie Dutton Sr.

John the Third and Evelyn adopted Jamie after his biological father killed his biological mother. This works out for the best, though, because Jamie soon learns to love life on the ranch, and he even welcomes a son named Jamie with his former girlfriend and campaign manager, Christina (Katherine Cunningham). He is later named Montana attorney general before dying the Season 5 finale.
Jamie has not appeared in 1883 or 1923 yet, and given the time jump, it is unclear if he ever will.
Beth Dutton

As John the Third and Evelyn’s only daughter, it only makes sense that Beth is as strong and outgoing as she is. A former powerful Salt Lake City, Utah-based banker, Beth returns home in Season 1 of Yellowstone and helps secure her family’s legacy in Montana.
While there, she reconnects with her lost love, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and the two eventually get married in Season 4 and take in an orphaned teen named Carter (Finn Little) after it is revealed that she can’t have kids of her own.
Beth has not appeared in 1883 or 1923.
Rip Wheeler

Rip Wheeler was an orphaned kid that John the Third took under his wing. While on the ranch, he falls in love with Beth—both as a teenager and as an adult—and eventually marries her. He then becomes the Dutton Ranch’s foreman and helps raise a troubled teen named Carter.
Like his wife, Rip has not appeared in 1883 or 1923.
Kayce Dutton

John the Third and Evelyn’s last kid is named Kayce, and he is a former Navy SEAL turned ranchman. He also plays a large part in helping the people of Montana get along with the Native Americans. This cause was made especially important to him because of his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille). The couple has two kids together—one of whom dies in Season 5 of the show.
Kayce is not in 1883 or 1923.
Monica Dutton

At the beginning of Yellowstone, Monica is married to Kayce and has two sons named Tate (Brecken Merrill) and John, the latter of whom dies. Their marriage endures throughout the entire run of the show, and while with him, Monica begins to understand that she, too, is powerful and can have a journey that’s not her husband’s.
Monica is not in the prequel shows.
Carter Dutton

As the foster son of Beth and Rip, Carter will serve as the next generation of Duttons to live on their Montana-based ranch. Before this, he was a troubled teen whom Beth and Rip took in, and while it is never said, it’s believed that the couple adopted him.
Carter doesn’t appear in 1883 or 1923.
Tate Dutton
At the beginning of his Yellowstone journey, Tate is just a small kid without any direction. As the story progresses, though, he soon steps up to the plate, and by the end of it is believed that he will become the ranch’s newest patriarch.
Tate doesn’t appear in the prequel shows.
Jamie Dutton Jr.
As of publication, Jamie Dutton Jr. is the youngest living Dutton and is still working on growing up on the Montana ranch. He is the son of Jamie Sr. and Christina and was born in Season 4 of the show.
He is not in 1883 or 1923.
