The Heartwarming Real-Life Friendships From ‘Schitt’s Creek’ That Prove This Cast Really Is Family
On-screen family turned off-screen friends—how Dan Levy and stars grew close for life
You know that warm, fuzzy feeling you get watching the Rose family find their way back to each other on Schitt’s Creek? Well, here’s something that’ll make your heart even happier: those beautiful family bonds weren’t just acting! Behind the cameras, this incredible cast created real friendships that mirror the love we fell in love with on screen. And honestly, discovering these genuine connections makes rewatching the show even more magical.
Dan Levy and Annie Murphy’s sibling-like bond

Annie Murphy and Dan Levy brought to life brother-sister duo Alexis and David Rose in an unparalleled way. Their chemistry as on-screen siblings was hard to replicate. Murphy perfectly captured that loving but exasperated sister dynamic with her signature “Ew, David!”
When Murphy and Levy weren’t bickering as siblings on screen, the duo found close friendship in one another off of it. “It’s been such fun to play with Dan,” Murphy told Vulture back in 2018. “I met him at the audition for the show, but it always felt like we’ve known each other for too long. Years and years and decades and centuries. Being able to bring the dynamic that we have in real life to the set has been so much fun.”
Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara’s decades-long friendship

It’s no wonder Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara were so convincing as married couple Johnny and Moira Rose—these two have been close friends since the 1970s and have the screen countless times before. Some of their most notable joint endeavors included Best in Show (2000), A Mighty Wind (2003), Nothing Personal (1980), For Your Consideration (2006) and Over the Hedge (2006). That being said, working together on this series was nothing short of extraordinary.
O’Hara sang Levy’s praises when she gave a speech at his Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony, saying, “Eugene is slow to anger, slow to judge. Some of his friends joke that he’s just generally slow. But no, I say he is patient, he is thoughtful, he is considerate,” Buzzfeed reported. “He carefully considers any new idea offered to him when he’s collaborating with others, and sometimes, once in a blue moon, you can shock him into laughing, but he’s usually so many steps ahead of you,” she said.
Dan Levy and Emily Hampshire’s David-and-Stevie dynamic in real life

Another beloved character on this series was Stevie, played by Emily Hampshire. Her deadpan delivery made her one of the most hilarious characters on the show, and while her chemistry with Dan Levy’s David was a fan-favorite, she found close friendship in her co-star off-screen as well. “My relationship with Dan is very similar to Stevie and David’s relationship,” Hampshire told PureWow.
She also shared her support for the Levy father-son duo’s Emmy hosting endeavor, telling PEOPLE ahead of the show, “I actually think they will be some of the best Emmys hosts ever, the two of them combined. So I’m really looking forward to it.”
What makes these friendships so special is how they remind us that the most beautiful relationships often bloom when we least expect them. Whether it’s finding your ‘chosen family’ like the Schitt’s Creek cast did, or simply being open to new connections in our own lives, there’s something wonderfully hopeful about watching people who started as strangers become genuine friends. After all, isn’t that the kind of love story we all deserve—both on screen and in real life?
