‘Welcome to the Patch’: Paramount Confirms That ‘1883’ Star Sam Elliot Has Joined the ‘Landman’ Cast
Also appearing in ‘1883’ is leading man Billy Bob Thornton, who originally shared the casting news
If there is one thing Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan loves to do, it’s reuse actors and actresses in a variety of his film and TV projects. Viewers saw it with Michelle Randolph, who played Elizabeth Dutton in 1923, and then went on to become Ainsley Norris in Landman, and again with Danielle Vasinova, who was in one episode of 1923 but has now been named one of the stars of the new spinoff The Madison. And now, it seems like Sheridan is doing it once again by casting 1883’s Sam Elliott in season 2 of Landman. We have all the must know details, including what the cast has to say below.
Sam Elliott joins the ‘Landman’ season 2 cast
Landman star Billy Bob Thornton dropped new information about filming Season 2 in a recent interview with Deadline, and seemingly confirmed that Elliott has been added to the cast. Thornton shed light on just how far back he goes with Elliott, as well as the show’s other stars Demi Moore and Andy Garcia.
“I go way back with both of them, and it’s pretty cool,” Thornton said. “Sam Elliott, I go back to the ’80s with. Yes, I’m old.”

Prior to Landman, Thornton and Elliott both starred in Sherdian’s Yellowstone prequel 1883, in which Thornton played Shea Brennan in all eight episodes. In contrast, Thornton only appeared in one episode as Marshal Jim Courtight.
“I had done a cameo for Taylor in 1883. I played the Marshal of Fort Worth and had a couple of scenes with my old buddies, Sam Elliott and Tim McGraw,” Thornton told Deadline in December 2024. “When they had the premiere of that in Las Vegas, I sat with Taylor at the dinner and he said, ‘Listen, I’m writing this show called Landman. You’re the landman. I’m going to write it in your voice.’ It was still a couple of years before we did the show because Taylor started writing it, and it interested me because you don’t really see the oil industry from the inside, and you don’t see the people out there in the fields in movies very often. Giant was one of my favorite movies. So, I was intrigued to be able to look into this world. But then the strikes happened, so Taylor had to lay off for a while. But the ones he sent me, it’s like, wow, he did kind of get my voice. If I were a landman, it’d be kind of like that.”

Then, on Tuesday, April 29, the official Landman Instagram account shared that Elliott would in fact be joining the cast as a series regular.
“Welcome to the patch, Sam Elliott,” the caption read. “See you on Season 2 of Landman. (But if you can’t wait, now’s the perfect time to rewatch #1883TV!)”
There is however no news on what character the actor will portray or how many episodes of Landman he will be in.
Sam Elliott talks Taylor Sheridan
As mentioned above, Elliott previously starred in 1883, which was the first-ever Yellowstone prequel produced.
“It’s a joy to work with him [Sheridan]. He’s all-powerful and all that, but he’s a nice man on top of it. He’s a taskmaster,” the actor said, per Taste of Country. “He told me in the beginning when we first started this thing [1883], and he was trying to convince me to do it, he says, ‘You’re gonna hate me at the end of this f–king.’ We’re approaching the end, and I don’t hate him, so we’ll see what happens.”

Fans of the prequel will remember that at the end of the show, Shea Brennan does reach the Pacific Ocean, like he promised his late wife he would, but then ends his own life shortly after. Because of this, and because it is believed that Shea had no other living family, it is highly unlikely that Elliott’s 1883 character will connect to his Landman one.
Who knows, though? Sheridan is known for being unpredictable, so maybe Elliot’s Landman character will be a long-lost relative or a forgotten family member. Only time will tell.
