The world's beloved tennis tournament is back, featuring the biggest names in the sport

Attention tennis fans! Wimbledon is officially underway, making its mark on the summer sporting scene. The popular event will span from July 1, 2024, to July 14, 2024, and will feature some of the biggest names in tennis. Keep scrolling to learn who is competing and how to watch.

All about Wimbledon 2024

Wimbledon, also known as The Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is often recognized as the best. It is also one of the four grand slam tournaments, alongside the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open. These are all played annually and usually around the same time.

Wimbledon is the only tennis Grand Slam Tournament still played on a grass court— which is the traditional tennis match surface — and it is also the only one that still requires a curfew of 11:00 p.m. However, players can keep playing under the stadium lights if needed, but it is highly discouraged.

The Wimbledon Grand Slam Tournament is played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England, every year and consists of women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s singles, men’s doubles and co-ed doubles.

Which U.S. tennis players are going to Wimbledon?

In the men’s singles tournament, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Chris  Eubank and Marcos Giron are expected to play. In the men’s doubles tournament, Taylor Fritz will team up with Tommy Paul, and Austin Krajicek will play with Rajeev Ram.

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro will compete in the singles tournament. In the doubles tournament, Coco Gauff will  play with Jessica Pegula, and Emma Navarro will play alongside Desirae Krawczyk.

“Obviously everybody has high expectations, especially when you’re on tour at such a young age. I think it would be both a surprise and satisfied with where I am right now,” Gauff said. “I think everybody has an equal shot and it’s just about who can perform better that week.”

Gauff is famous for making her Wimbledon debut at 15  and is currently the reigning U.S. Open champion. Amid her successes, she has remained incredibly supportive of her fellow American tennis players.

“I think for me it just shows there’s a lot of talent on the women’s tour and it’s anybody’s game,” she said. “It gives you confidence obviously when you see that the field isn’t stacked. I guess stacked in the way where there’s one player dominating or three players dominating.”

Are the USA Wimbledon players still going to the Summer Olympics?

All of these athletes are also expected to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. This is allowed because tennis is the one Olympic sport where “pro athletes” are allowed to go for the gold.

Those tennis matches will be played on a clay court, as with the French Open.
