Whether you keep them on hand for a midday snack or only treat yourself on a roadtrip, Hostess snack cakes have been a go-to for many people since the ‘60s. If you have a secret stash of the treats, you may want to check your pantry—one variety has been recalled thanks to the possibility of the cakes becoming unsafe for consumption. Keep reading to learn more about the Hostess Ding Dong recall, what packages are included and what to do if you purchased the snack cakes.
Why Hostess recalled Ding Dongs in 2025
The J.M. Smucker Co., parent company of Hostess Brands, has issued a voluntary recall of some of its popular snack cakes. The brand sells more than a dozen different varieties, but all of the impacted products are for Ding Dongs.
These cream-filled chocolate cakes have been produced since 1967 and are one of the most loved treats. If you’re one of the many consumers who can’t get enough of them and recently purchased the snack cakes, you may have to toss them. The company has initiated a withdrawal notice for some of its Ding Dong products due to the potential presence of mold, reports AllRecipes.com.
In one notice, the company states that an investigation revealed there was a mechanical issue during production that could cause mold to grow on the cakes before their expiration date. Though the issue was reportedly resolved, the recall is being issued as a precautionary measure so customers who consume the snack items don’t get sick. Ingesting mold can lead to stomach discomfort, respiratory issues, allergic reactions and more.
Which Hostess Ding Dong products are affected
Only select lots of Ding Dongs are impacted by the notice, and all have best-buy dates ranging from late August to early September.
Here are the recalled snack cakes:
- Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Single Serve (2-pack)
- Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong (10-count)
- Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Family Pack (16-count)
No other Hostess products are included in the recall at this time.
Where the recalled Ding Dongs were sold

As of now, no further information has been provided about where exactly the Ding Dong lots have been shipped. All that’s known is that this is a nationwide recall with stores around the country having received the products.
It’s possible that many retailers have already pulled the Ding Dong packages from the shelves before consumers were able to purchase the items. However, since the food products were already approaching the end of their shelf life, there’s a chance people have already eaten them before any mold could form.
What to do if you bought Hostess Ding Dongs
