When the holidays roll around, there’s nothing quite like a cozy sip of creamy hot chocolate. It’s a dessert, a drink and a nostalgic winter experience all wrapped up in one steamy mug. But chances are more than one person wants one–and that means waiting. That’s why my favorite way to make it is with my slow cooker. Not only does it serve up perfectly rich and creamy results, but it also keeps the holiday chaos to a minimum. Whether you’re hosting a movie night or an elegant Christmas party, this slow cooker hot chocolate recipe is about to become your new holiday MVP.

Why make hot chocolate in a slow cooker?

Hot chocolate might sound simple, but preparing it for a crowd can turn into a juggling act of whisking, pouring and reheating. So, if you don’t want to feel dizzy handling individual cups, use your slow cooker, the ultimate hands-off tool for effortless entertaining. By slowly melting your chocolate and blending it with milk and cream, you achieve a velvety texture and evenly distributed sweetness without the risk of burning it on the stove. Plus, with a slow cooker, you can keep your hot chocolate warm for hours—because who wants to sip on cold chocolate?

Slow cooker hot chocolate is as simple as it sounds, but a few tips can take it from good to absolutely decadent:

Use high-quality ingredients

Since the recipe relies on just a handful of ingredients, quality is key. Opt for whole milk, heavy cream and good-quality chocolate (either chips or chopped from a bar). Remember, there’s a difference between hot cocoa (which uses cocoa powder) and hot chocolate. You can always use the packet to save time, but hot chocolate has a richer, creamier finish that tastes more decadent.

Mix in phases

Start by melting your chocolate with a little bit of milk to ensure a smooth base, then gradually add the remaining ingredients. If you want a richer, creamier hot chocolate, swap in half-in-half or heavy cream instead of milk.

Don’t overheat

Keep your slow cooker on low to prevent the milk and cream from curdling. Stir occasionally to ensure everything is well blended.

Keep it warm

Once your hot chocolate is ready, switch your slow cooker to the “keep warm” setting so it stays perfectly drinkable without getting too hot.

One of my favorite parts about serving slow cooker hot chocolate is transforming it into a hot chocolate bar. Here’s how to set it up for maximum holiday cheer:

  • Pick your toppings: Offer classics like whipped cream, mini marshmallows and chocolate shavings. For a festive twist, include crushed candy canes, caramel drizzle and holiday sprinkles.
  • Upgrade with mix-ins: Set out syrups like hazelnut, vanilla or peppermint for guests to stir into their mugs. For an adult-friendly option, include small bottles of Baileys, rum or bourbon.
  • Make it personal: Provide fun mugs, stir sticks or even edible candy-cane spoons for guests to customize their cups.

This simple recipe from Old Salt Farm makes 15 servings of hot chocolate in under three hours. If you don’t have a slow cooker, this also works in a large pot or dutch oven on low heat for about 20 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups whole milk,  or 3 cups whole milk and 3 cups half and half
  • 2 (12 oz.) cans evaporated milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 cups chocolate chips

Directions:

  • Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 15 servings
  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a 6-quart slow cooker. Cook on low for two to three hours, stirring often the first hour, to make sure the chocolate incorporates and doesn’t burn on the bottom. You can leave it on warm once it’s heated through, and if it’s too hot to serve on low.
  2. 30 minutes before serving, add large and mini marshmallows to the slow cooker. Once the marshmallows are melted, use a ladle to serve the hot chocolate into mugs, then top with all of your favorite hot chocolate toppings.

Make-ahead and storage tips

One of the best things about this recipe? It’s as easy to prepare in advance as it is to serve. To prep ahead, measure and mix your dry ingredients and store them in an airtight container. When you’re ready to make, add your milk and cream to the slow cooker, stir in the mix and let it heat up.

If you have extra hot chocolate, let it cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to three days. To reheat, pour it back into the slow cooker or warm it gently on the stovetop.
