Drew Barrymore’s Favorite Sandwich Is a Classic Tuna Melt—Here’s How to Make It
The actress and talk show host swears by this classic, but she has strong opinions about it
Of all the diner-inspired dishes, perhaps none sparks more debate than the humble tuna sandwich. Served hot or cold, it has its fair share of loyal fans and skeptics. But one thing is certain—canned tuna is a versatile, affordable and surprisingly healthy ingredient. And actress Drew Barrymore isn’t afraid to flaunt her love for a good, old-fashioned tuna melt. In fact, she proudly stated on live television it was her favorite sandwich. And with this quick and easy recipe, you might be want to as well.
Drew Barrymore shares her favorite sandwich
During a February appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Barrymore participated in the “Colbert Questionert,” a segment where guests answer rapid-fire personal questions. When asked, “What is the best sandwich?” Barrymore thought for a second before yelling out: “Tuna melt!” She shrugged unapologetically as the audience laughed.
Colbert pressed further, asking, “Open-faced?” Barrymore was quick to shut that idea down. “No. I hate an open-faced sandwich. It’s not a sandwich.” She mimed holding a stacked sub in both hands and said, “That’s a sandwich.”
What is a tuna melt?
A tuna melt is the ultimate fusion of a grilled cheese and a tuna salad sandwich. Traditionally, it consists of creamy tuna salad, melty cheese and toasted bread. Some versions are served open-faced, where the filling sits on top of a single slice of bread and is broiled to perfection. But as Barrymore made clear, she’s firmly on Team Closed-Face, meaning her ideal tuna melt has two slices of bread, pressed together for the perfect gooey bite.
Pro tips for the best tuna melt
Before you get cooking, here are a few expert tips to make your tuna melt even better. Just remember—if you’re making it Barrymore-style, don’t even think about serving it open-faced!
- Choose the right tuna. Solid white albacore is milder in flavor and firmer in texture, while chunk light tuna is softer and has a stronger taste. Pick based on your preference!
- Get the perfect bread texture. Sourdough or rye bread holds up well to toasting and adds extra flavor. Avoid soft sandwich bread, which can get soggy.
- Don’t skip the butter. Spreading butter (or mayo!) on the outside of the bread before grilling gives your sandwich a perfectly crisp and golden crust.

Barrymore didn’t share an exact recipe, but we can piece together the basics of a classic tuna melt that lives up to her standards. A great tuna melt starts with quality ingredients, proper seasoning and of course, the right bread and cheese combination. Here’s how to make one (but you can double or triple the recipe if you’re feeding more than yourself).
Ingredients:
- 1 can (5 oz.) tuna, drained
- 2 Tbs. mayonnaise
- 1 tsp. Dijon mustard
- 1 Tbs. diced celery (optional, for crunch)
- 1 Tbs. diced red onion
- 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 slices of sturdy bread (sourdough, rye or whole wheat)
- 2 slices of cheese (cheddar, Swiss or American)
- 1 Tbs. butter
Directions:
- Total time: 10-13 minutes
- Yield: 1 sandwich
- In a small bowl, mix together the tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery, red onion, lemon juice, salt and black pepper.
- Spread the tuna mixture evenly onto one slice of bread, then layer with cheese. Top with the second slice of bread.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat, then and add butter.
- Place the sandwich in the pan and cook for about three to four minutes per side, pressing down lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from heat, slice in half and serve warm.
