While you don’t need much in your pantry for this recipe, we reccommend using high-quality ingredients. Seriously, it makes all the difference.

  • Strawberries: Choose fresh, ripe strawberries with bright green leaves for the best flavor and presentation. Avoid mushy or underripe berries, as they won’t hold up as well.
  • Chocolate: Go for high-quality semi-sweet, dark or milk chocolate. Chocolate chips work, but a chopped chocolate bar melts more smoothly and gives a shinier finish.
  • Coconut oil (optional): A small amount of coconut oil helps create a glossy, even coating and prevents the chocolate from hardening too quickly.
  • Toppings: Get creative! Crushed nuts, shredded coconut, sprinkles, crushed cookies or a white chocolate drizzle can add some pizazz.

Tips for success

Want flawless chocolate-covered strawberries every time? Here’s how:

Completely dry your strawberries

Even a little moisture can cause the chocolate to seize up, creating a grainy or clumpy texture.

Use a deep cup for dipping

Instead of a shallow bowl, try melting your chocolate in a deep cup or mug for easier dipping and even coverage.

Let them set at room temp first

Refrigerating too soon can create condensation and dull the chocolate’s shine. If you want that gorgeous, glossy finish, wait a bit more (patience is a virtue).

Follow this easy tutorial from Tastes Better from Scratch, which only uses two ingredients!

Ingredients:

  • 1 (10 oz.) package Ghirardelli Baking Chips, bittersweet, semi-sweet or milk chocolate
  • 2 lbs. fresh strawberries, stems attached
  • 1 (10 oz.) package white chocolate chips (optional)

Directions:

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 30 strawberries
  1. Start by washing the strawberries and then drying them well.
  2. If desired, add a handful of your preferred toppings onto their own small plates. Then, line a sheet pan with parchment or waxed paper.
  3. Use a double boiler method or microwave to melt the chocolate in 30 second intervals, removing and stirring after each, until the chocolate has melted. Stir often, making sure not to burn the chocolate.
  4. Holding a strawberry by the stem, dip into melted chocolate, lift and twist slightly, letting the excess chocolate drip back into the bowl. At this point, immediately roll the strawberry in desired toppings (or leave it plain). Then, place the strawberry on the parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the strawberries.
  5. For a white chocolate drizzled strawberry, dip a fork in melted white chocolate and drizzle in thin strips over the dipped strawberries.
  6. Chill the strawberries until the chocolate sets, about 15 minutes.

How to store chocolate covered strawberries

For the best taste and texture, enjoy these beauties the same day you make them. But if you need to store them, arrange in a single layer in the fridge on parchment paper for up to 24 hours. Avoid airtight containers—they can trap moisture and make the chocolate sweat, creating a sticky surface.

If you’re making chocolate covered strawberries ahead of time, consider refrigerating them uncovered for a short time, then lightly tenting them with plastic wrap to prevent excess condensation.
