Seafood pasta may seem like a dish that you can only enjoy at a restaurant, but it’s surprisingly easy to make at home. Pantry staples, such as diced tomatoes, onions and olive oil, along with your favorite combination of seafood produces a mouthwatering seafood pasta dish without the restaurant prices. Even better, using a frozen seafood mix is the money-saving alternative to buying shrimp, mussels and other fish separately—and it saves you time! Here’s more on seafood pasta and a delicious recipe that goes from stove to table in 15 minutes.

The basics of seafood pasta

At its core, this dish tosses pasta in sauce with a variety of seafood. The sauce can be a cream-based mixture, but making it with tomatoes creates a heartier dish. A restaurant like Angeline by Michael Symon at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City uses locally sourced shrimp, clams, crabs and calamari and fresh handmade noodles in their seafood spaghetti. This sweet seafood balances the savory pomodoro (tomato) sauce for an irresistible meal.

But if you can’t make the trip to Angeline or another restaurant for this dish, it’s simple to whip up with a key ingredient shortcut.

An ingredient shortcut for speedy seafood pasta

Buying different types of fresh shellfish can be pricey at the seafood counter. So, it’s worth seeing if your store has a frozen seafood mix that contains shrimp, clams and other shellfish as it tends to be cheaper. A 0.6-pound bag of seafood mix from Wild Fork Foods costs under $5—making it a true money-saver. Also, you can simply thaw the mix and cook with it right away instead of needing to peel and devein the seafood.

Prepare this simple and hearty seafood pasta recipe

For a restaurant-quality seafood pasta dish, try this recipe from Coles (an Australian supermarket). The recipe is tasty as is, but feel free to customize it by sautéing the onions with minced garlic and/or squeezing fresh lemon over the final dish.

Seafood Pasta

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 (14.5-oz.) can diced tomatoes
  • 14 oz. thawed seafood mix
  • 13 oz. dry spaghetti
  • 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  • Active: 5 mins
  • Total time: 15 mins
  • Yield: 4 servings
  1. Heat olive oil in large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add onion and cook, stirring, 5 minutes or until onion softens. Stir in red pepper flakes, if using, and cook 1 minute or until aromatic. Add tomato and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer 5 minutes or until sauce thickens slightly. Season with generous pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Add seafood mix and gently fold through sauce. Reduce heat to low. Cook 2 minutes or until seafood is just cooked through. Remove from heat.
  4. Meanwhile, cook pasta in a pot of salted boiling water following the box’s directions until al dente. Reserve a couple ladlefuls of starchy pasta liquid in case the sauce needs it.
  5. Add pasta and ⅔ of parsley to seafood mixture. Gently fold to combine and add pasta water if needed to bring together sauce. Top with the remaining parsley. Serve immediately.
