If you’ve ever tried teaching a little one baby animal names and got stumped on otter or sloth, look no further. Since we’re absolutely enchanted with tiny creatures here we decided to look into a few unconventional (or just plain adorable) labels for baby animals. From birds to bunnies and a lot of fluffy ones in between, here is a quick refresher for the next time you don’t have an answer for your grandchild.
-
Baby Sloth Name
The name for a baby sloth is cub.
Leave it to the lazy little sloth to borrow its name from wild felines and tiny bears.
-
Baby Goose Name
The Name for a Baby Goose is Gosling
At only one day old, goslings are so accomplished they can dive 30 - 40 feet into the water.
-
-
Baby Elephant Name
The name for a baby elephant is calf.
Just the same as a cow but significantly heavier, at birth, an elephant infant is about three feet tall and weighs approximately 200 pounds.
-
Baby Deer Name
The name for a baby deer is fawn.
Little fawns are house cat size (with long elegant legs, of course) and are covered with about 300 white spots.
-
Baby Duck Name
The name for a baby duck is duckling.
Alright, this one is a bit of a gimme. We bet you didn't know, however, ducks rely on an oil gland to swim in the water safely. And since ducklings don't develop it right away the mama duck rubs her oil on their feathers before the little ones go for a dip!
-
-
Baby Goat Name
The name for a baby goat is kid.
Just like humans, albeit a little fuzzier than our grandchildren. And a goat giving birth is said to be (wait for it) kidding!
-
Baby Kangaroo
The name for a baby kangaroo is joey.
A Joey stays in it's mother's pouch until it's about eight months old and able to roam around freely. If only our children could be so independent!
-
Baby Penguin Name
The name for a baby penguin is chick.
The little penguin has a fairly common moniker for birds, though it's also known as a nestling. And when chicks gather in a group they're called a crèche (or "trouble" if they can't fall in line)!
-
-
Baby Otter Name
The name for a baby otter is pup.
They can float but not swim at first, so their mothers either wrap them in kelp or make a "playpen" out of found items in order to keep them still.
-
Baby Rabbit Name
The name for a baby rabbit is kit.
We would've guessed "bunny," but no, it's an abbreviation on kitten. Typically a female rabbit has about 12 or 13 kits in a litter!
