We all want to do what’s best for our bodies, and after years of hearing about the potential link between antiperspirants, or deodorants, and serious health risks such as cancer, natural deodorants have never sounded better. These aluminum-free, non-toxic alternatives to regular deodorants have been getting plenty of buzz as of late — but do these natural deodorants really work?

Why wear natural deodorant?

Though the National Cancer Institute states that there is no scientific evidence confirming a link between the use of antiperspirants and breast cancer, many are still skeptical of some of the ingredients found in traditional deodorants.

The main culprits for concern are aluminum chloride — a salt compound which  essentially plugs our sweat ducts, stopping sweat from reaching the surface of our skin, according to Dr. Rodney Sinclair, derm, who spoke to Huffington Post Australia, and parabens.

Since our bodies may absorb some of those components with deodorant application, experts believe that they can potentially affect our hormones in a negative manner.

“It is believed that these components may affect the hormones — in women, particularly — and therefore may increase the risk of breast cancer by affecting the hormone balance,” Professor Guy Elsick, professor of Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Sydney, explained to Huffington Post Australia. “Part of this comes down to the fact that a large majority of breast cancer lesions are found in the upper quadrant, near the armpit. As a result, some researchers have tried to correlate cancer risk with deodorant use as a potential risk factor.”

The possibility is especially alarming for those in more mature age brackets, who see increasing breast cancer risks over the age of 40, and has led many women to make the switch to natural deodorants.

But, as with anything else, not all natural deodorant is created equally!

Natural Deodorant That Really Works

For all their good intentions, many natural-based products have yet to live up to the body odor protection of their traditional counterparts, making it important to select the right one.

It’s also common for a detox period to occur when transitioning to a natural deodorant. After the thousands of swipes you’ve applied to your body of conventional antiperspirants over the years, your body may suddenly begin to produce excess sweat and stronger-than-usual smells. This period can take up to 30 days to resolve, so it might be a good idea to introduce an armpit mask, like Lavanila’s The Healthy Underarm Detox Mask ($26), which can help to remove aluminums, impurities, and other built-up chemicals from your underarm area, ahead of making the switch.
