15 of the Prettiest Spring Flowers in Bloom

Tags:

Spring flowers blooming are without a doubt one of the best parts of the season, which — contrary to what the lingering snow on the ground might have you believe — begins today, March 20. After a long, brutally cold (and sometimes depressing) winter, the arrival of spring symbolizes the start of something new, and we can’t think of any other symbol of the season that better sums up that feeling of rebirth than fresh flowers. If you need a reminder that spring has sprung, gazing at the most colorful blooms the season has to offer is a beautiful way to start.

When do spring flowers bloom?

Typically, spring flowers first begin to peek out from the dirt starting in March and continuing on through May. The start of spring is scientifically known as the vernal equinox. The word “equinox” comes from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” During equinox, the sun will pass the celestial equator as it travels from south to north. On this day, there will (almost) exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night — so don’t be surprised if you see daylight sticking around a little longer than it has been over the past few weeks. As we move further into the calendar, the days will become even longer, the nights will become even shorter, and the weather will finally get warmer. (At least, this is true for the Northern Hemisphere; in the Southern Hemisphere, the opposite is happening.)

The first flowers to bloom include crocuses, hyacinths, and fritillaria — all personal favorites of ours. Soon to follow are the lovely daffodils, tulips, Lily of the valley, and bluebells. As we all know, spring and its beautiful flowers can’t last forever because a few months later, summer will arrive. But aren’t the pretty plants wondrous to behold while they’re here?

Regardless of how short-lived these gorgeous spring flowers’ time in bloom is, their beauty has staying power. As author David Crystal once said, “There is no such thing as an ugly accent, like there’s no such thing as an ugly flower,” and we couldn’t agree more. Here are some of the prettiest and brightest flowers of the season that are guaranteed to warm hearts all year round.
