Hero Dog Fillmore Saves Sleeping Family After Smoke Alarms Miss Raging Garage Fire
The family lost their garage, their cars, and everything inside. Thanks to Fillmore, that's all they lost.
When Fillmore’s family told him to be quiet in the middle of the night, the German shorthaired pointer refused to listen. Thank goodness he didn’t.
Fillmore is now being hailed a hero after his persistent barking woke his family and alerted them to a garage fire at their home on Skyway Drive in Unincorporated Tustin, Orange County — a fire their smoke alarms never detected.
Every pet owner knows the feeling: your dog barks at 4 a.m. and you groan, roll over and tell them to knock it off. That’s exactly what happened in the Dalis household early Wednesday morning. But Fillmore knew something his humans didn’t.
A Hero Dog’s Nose That Wouldn’t Quit
German shorthaired pointers are natural hunters with a keen sense of smell, and Fillmore’s instincts kicked in from a dead sleep. In the wee hours of the morning, something suspicious hit his nose, and he began barking urgently from his bed.
Homeowner Tom Dalis, his wife and his 90-year-old mother-in-law were all asleep when the fire started. The household smoke alarms never activated because the fire was burning in the garage, on the opposite side of the home.
Without Fillmore, there was no warning system at all.
“Fillmore was barking at about 4:15 a.m. He normally doesn’t bark. He kept barking. We kept telling him, ‘Fillmore, quiet, quiet.’ He just kept barking and I said, ‘Maybe there’s something out there,’” Dalis told NBCLA.
Dalis proceeded to look out his back window when he saw a flickering light. He initially thought the neighbor’s house was on fire. Upon further investigation, he realized it was his own garage that was fully engulfed in flames.
Dalis Attempts to Contain House Fire With Garden Hoses
According to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), Dalis used garden hoses to try to slow the fire’s spread before firefighters arrived. He reportedly sustained minor burns to his face while battling the blaze.
The OCFA contained the fire to the garage, preventing it from spreading to the house.
Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. The garage was destroyed, all three of the family’s vehicles were lost and everything stored inside the garage was gone.
Investigators believe the cause was electrical, though the investigation is ongoing, per NBCLA.
But Dalis was clear about what mattered most. “They’re only things. They can be replaced,” Dalis said of his lost belongings. “Everybody is safe.”
“I think we know it was because of Fillmore,” Dalis told NBCLA.
Snuggles, Treats and Internet Fame
After the fire was out, Fillmore got the hero’s welcome he deserved.
Before leaving the scene, firefighters gave him pats, snuggles and some well-deserved attention. Back at home, his family made sure he received plenty of treats as a reward for his heroism.
The OCFA publicly praised Fillmore on social media, sharing the story along with photos and videos. The response was immediate and enthusiastic.
Many people in the comments called him a good boy and said the dog deserved an award. “Fillmore deserves a lifetime of steak — he saved his people, and helped the neighborhood!” one person wrote in an Instagram comment.
It’s the kind of story that reminds every pet owner why we share our beds, our couches and our lives with these animals.
Fillmore wasn’t trained in fire detection. He didn’t have a special certification. He was just a dog who loved his family, had a nose that wouldn’t quit and refused to be shushed when it mattered most.
That’s what makes him the very best boy.
