Viral Golden Retriever Wedding Raises Money for Dogs in Need With 60 Guests
A dog wedding with 60 guests? These golden retrievers turned a 'silly idea' into a real charity event.
Sometimes the internet delivers exactly what your heart ordered. This is one of those times.
Golden retrievers Maeve and Oakley tied the knot on March 31 in East Sussex, surrounded by 60 human guests, a custom dog-friendly wedding cake and—best of all—their six puppies. The charity wedding raised money for dog welfare, proving that even the silliest ideas can carry real meaning.
A golden retriever love story worth wagging about
Maeve’s owner, Hannah Brown, was the first to admit the whole thing sounds a little out there. She documented the event on Instagram ahead of the ceremony, writing a message that might as well be a motto for anyone craving a break from heavy headlines.
“We know it sounds a bit silly (okay, a lot silly), but honestly, life’s too short for negativity,” Brown wrote. “Sometimes you just need a little love, a little chaos, and a lot of wagging tails.”
That self-aware humor paired with genuine warmth is exactly what made the event resonate. Brown told the BBC that the wedding began as a “silly idea” intended to bring positivity.
“I think it’s just nice to spread some love and positivity,” she said. “Life is too short.”
How golden retrievers Maeve and Oakley met
Every great wedding has an origin story, and this one is as wholesome as it gets. According to Brown, the dogs met through their owners’ families, who are close friends.
“We’re good friends with [Oakley’s] family,” she told the BBC. “We’ve gone on lots of holidays together. It’s a lovely little love story.”
Brown also said on This Morning that the dogs’ bond developed over time: after going “on lots of lovely walks together,” their love “has just blossomed.”
The couple already shares six puppies—so really, the wedding was long overdue.
A golden celebration with heart
The ceremony wasn’t just about fun. On the big day, Brown and Oakley’s owner, Stuart, raised money for Dogs Trust USA, which works to address dog welfare issues globally.
Brown shared that intention ahead of the event, writing: “On the big day, we’ll be collecting donations for a dogs’ charity to give back to our furry friends in need. Because love is best when it’s shared. 💕🐾.”
Even Dogs Trust USA got in on the spirit. Ahead of the ceremony, the organization told the BBC: “We are aware of the upcoming nuptials between Maeve and Oakley. We wish the happy couple all the best for the future.”
No wedding is complete without cake, and Maeve and Oakley’s reception was no exception. The ceremony included a custom cake made from oats, bananas and mashed potatoes—crafted specifically for the four-legged guests of honor.
Sixty guests showed up to celebrate, and by all accounts, the joy was contagious.
“It was just amazing, such a lovely day,” Brown said. “It was so precious. It was just so lovely to see all the kids there and everyone just loving it. Even the puppies loved every minute of it.”
