Key Takeaways

  • NASA's Artemis II launch takes place on April 1 with a target of 6:24 p.m.
  • You can view the launch in person from neighboring cities, or stream it live on NASA+.
  • Four astronauts will be on board the spacecraft as they study the vessel's capability.

If you weren’t alive for the first moon landing, you’re on track to catch the second in the next few years thanks to the work being done by NASA—and tomorrow’s Artemis II launch is just one of the many ways they’re preparing for a 2028 touchdown. The Artemis II mission will send a crew of four astronauts around the moon, and while they won’t be landing this time around, their journey will help pave the way for future astronauts to make it back on the moon’s surface within a few years. The crew consists of Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch and Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen. Here, read all about the Artemis II launch, when it will launch and how you can see it for yourself.

When does Artemis II launch?

The Artemis II moon mission will send astronauts into space aboard the SLS (Space Launch System), which is a deep space rocket beneath the Orion spacecraft. Their 10-day mission will allow them to “confirm all the spacecraft’s systems operate as designed with crew aboard in the actual environment of deep space,” explained NASA. Their vessel, which is set to launch on April 1, will take them over 230,000 miles from Earth as they travel along the far side of the moon.

The spacecraft has an anticipated launch time of 6:24 p.m. EST, but NASA and their crews are closely monitoring weather conditions, and as of right now, things are looking 80% favorable. Should the launch be unable to proceed tomorrow, it could also happen on April 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 30.

How to watch Artemis II rocket launch

The Artemis II launch will take place at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, and while visitors who purchased viewing packages can see the action up close from either the Main Viewing Center or the Apollo/Saturn V center, others will have to see it via livestream—unless you live in Florida! If you happen to find yourself in the “Space Coast” or Brevard County, there’s a good chance you’ll spot the rocket heading upward from cities like Titusville, Cocoa, Merritt Island or Melbourne, to name a few. Other places such as Vero Beach and even Volusia County may offer views.

If you won’t be close enough to view the Artemis II launch in person, you’ll be able to stream it live. At 12:50 p.m. on April 1, the official broadcast will begin on NASA+

As we stand on the brink of a new era of space exploration, tomorrow’s Artemis II launch reminds us that humanity’s spirit of discovery and courage knows no bounds. Whether you’re watching from Florida or streaming from your living room, you’ll be witnessing a moment that brings us closer to the stars—and closer to inspiring the next generation of dreamers and explorers. Here’s to reaching for the moon and beyond!
