Old Lady in Bookstore Buys $400 Worth of Books and Chocolate for Stranger Because of Her Own Son’s Sad Fate

Bookstore worker Christine Turel was having an ordinary day on the job when a “lovably kooky” older lady came in, gushing about the bookstore, chocolate, and Turel’s bangs.

Turel was having fun chatting with her, when the woman suddenly spotted a young man buying college textbooks. And she had a jaw-dropping offer for him.

In a Love What Matters post, Turel wrote, “She turns around to him and, out of nowhere, demands that he put his textbooks on the counter. He’s confused but she explains that she’s going to buy his textbooks.”

The college student was in shock. After all, his books weren’t cheap. They clocked in at about $400 total. But the woman was insistent.

She also added chocolates to the pile of books, because she said he “needed” that, too. The young man was in tears, but grateful tears, as he hugged her.

Then the woman said, “It’s important to be kind. You can’t know all the times that you’ve hurt people in tiny, significant ways. It’s easy to be cruel without meaning to be. There’s nothing you can do about that. But you can choose to be kind. Be kind.”

Turel was shocked, but not as shocked as she was about to be once the student left.

“My son is a homeless meth addict. I don’t know what I did,” she revealed. “I see that boy and I see the man my son could have been if someone had chosen to be kind to him at just the right time.”

Though Turel was floored by the confession, she was able to take away an important lesson: “Be kind to somebody today.”

Wow! We could all do well to follow that advice.
