You’ll Never Guess 2020’s Most Popular Baby Names (So Far)
Parents are getting creative!
Despite all of the craziness amidst the global pandemic, parents are still welcoming newborn babies into their hearts and homes every day. These sweet little bundles are no doubt bringing a lot of much-needed light and joy to their families right now.
And, of course, they all need names! The moniker experts at Nameberry recently shared the most popular names people have searched for on their site so far this year. Just like the picks from 2019, you’ll probably be surprised to see which names take the top spots for soon-to-be parents.

Top 5 Baby Boy Names for 2020
- Asher
- Milo
- Oliver
- Levi
- Silas
This time last year, Asher was in at #5 but has moved up to take the top spot, pushing Milo down a notch. None of the other top five boy names made the cut last year, but a few still pop up when you look at the top 10: Atticus, Theodore, and Jasper take the sixth, seventh, and eighth ranks.
As for baby girls, Luna is making a comeback and replacing last year’s floral #1 name, Posie, which has been knocked off the list entirely. The other four girl names listed were popular a year ago, too, but in an almost completely opposite order.
Maybe all the extra time spent indoors has inspired new parents to get more creative with picking what to call their little ones. We wouldn’t be surprised if tuning into Chrissy Teigen’s Instagram for a fun distraction is the reason her four-year-old daughter’s name, Luna, is suddenly re-gaining popularity. Nameberry also claims that names starting with “Lu” have been getting a lot more love in general lately for both boys and girls, like Lucy and Lucas.
Other trends they’ve spotted include a preference for two-syllable names, names with “L” or “El” sounds (like Elias and Eleanor), ones that start with “M” for girls, and ones that end in “S” for boys.
Official name rankings from the Social Security Administration only go up to 2018 for now, so we’ll have to wait and see which of these monikers parents really choose. In the meantime, you can look back at the most popular names dating all the way back to 1879 on their website.
