DIY Halloween Decor: Giant Skeleton
In the video below, TikTok user @louseflores_ was challenged by someone to create a Halloween animatronic-style skeleton for under $15. Naturally, she headed to the dollar store!
First, she zip-tied a metal paper towel holder to the top of an upside-down laundry basket. Then she stuck the handle of a mop into the top of the basket. A hanger cut in half and taped to the handle became the shoulders while a pool noodle cut in half was used for the arms.
Plastic skeleton hands attached to the pool noodles and a large black trash bag as a “cape” really brought this skeleton to life. Finally, the decoration was completed with black “creepy cloth,” a skeleton mask, a plastic change and a battery-operated candle.
Luckily, not all DIY Halloween décor has to be so complex. You can still create festive displays for less with half the effort. In one video,@makingitwithabby on TikTok shows how you can create “ghost candles.”
All you must do is use a black permanent marker to draw a ghost’s face onto white pillar candles. Then stick the candles into black candle holders. Spooky! (For more ghost fun, try our ghost gingerbread cookies).

Looking to unleash your artistic side? This project may be for you. It involves turning a dollar store chalkboard into a Halloween countdown calendar. TikTok user @jaymuneediysays you need a mini chalkboard, cake decorating tools, fake nails and modeling clay (though she says you can get more bang for your buck for this at Walmart).
Start by rolling modeling clay into five small balls that can be rolled into a cigar shape. Next, form them into little fingers. “With the dollar tree cake tools, I’m making the impressions for the knuckles and cutting the fingers down a bit,” she explains.
Next, press the fake nails onto the “fingers,” but don’t glue them down just yet. You’ll first want to remove the nails and paint the fingers before you glue the nails on.
Jay wraps up the project by gluing the fingers and the countdown calendar to the chalkboard. Watch the video for a step-by-step tutorial:
Spooky bowls are a wonderful way to serve up candies and treats during the season. The good news? You can make your own for pennies! TikTok user @makeitwithmicah did just this using two simple items from the Dollar Tree: a plastic skeleton and a black bowl.
In the video she shows how all it takes is cutting the plastic figurine down to multiple parts and gluing them to the outside of the bowl. The finished product, once you add candy, resembles a skeleton taking a soak in a bathtub.
Like displaying artificial or real flowers in autumn but want a Halloween twist? Create creepy-crawly vases using dollar store goodies. TikTok user @craftymom94made some using cheap vessels and plastic bug toys.
She shows in the video below how she glued the fake bugs onto glass bowls and cups, then spray painted black or white. The final addition: Faux greenery!
Dollar stores make it easy to repurpose items, and this Halloween décor idea really highlights how it can be done. TikTok user @growley222made quite the display out of none other than a plunger!
After painting the handle black, she cut and glued tan colored yarn on the lower half of the plunger so that it covered the bottom of the plunger. Loosening some of the yarn pieces left the entire thing resembling a witch’s broom in just a flash.
Once again, some of the most eye-catchy displays can be some of the simplest. TikTok user @tlc9955created creepy eyeballs that will surely make any spooky season guests feel a bit uneasy. (Throwing a Halloween party? Click through for fun hosting ideas!)
Start by using red permanent markers to draw veins onto two large plastic bowls. Next, spray paint the bowls white. Once dry, secure giant eye decorations (found at the Dollar Tree) to the flat part of the bowl.
Though these eyes were placed in a bush, they could be displayed in the house, as well!
If you like a haunted house vibe, this mirror DIY craft may be perfect for you. TikTok user @ky_mom_79put together the display using nothing but items from the Dollar Tree.
Transforming your front porch into a frighteningly festive Halloween display is easy and affordable
After removing the paper back of a small, framed mirror, she aggressively rubbed sandpaper on the non-reflective side of a mirror. This left a small window that was entirely transparent. Gluing a black and white, Halloween-esque photo in that spot then gave the entire mirror the appearance that a ghost is peeking through.
