A bathroom renovation always seems like a great idea, especially when your bathroom in question has seen much better days. If that’s you, don’t be embarrassed — we’ve all been there, and it’s easy to put a bathroom renovation off for other crucial tasks in the home that need to be completed.

But in one homeowner’s case, there wasn’t really much of a choice. You see, this homeowner was planning on renting out a basement suite to potential tenants in the property. And the reddit user projectdiy could simply not even think about advertising the bathroom looking the way it did. From the yellow-stained tub to the squishy drywall and ugly tiles, this bathroom clearly had to go. The best part? The whole project only cost $500 to complete. We don’t know about you, but this sounds like a great idea to apply to our own bathrooms, even though we’re not renting any out anytime soon. Our bathrooms could all use a little TLC — it’s arguably the most useful room in the house, after all!

We have to admit, we feel slightly uneasy looking at the original bathroom that came with the property. Clearly, the owner felt the same way!

The tub surround was the first to go, and thankfully it was an easy removal, with the drywall crumbling from behind it. The best part? There was actually a proper vapor barrier between it, so the owner wouldn't have to replace studs and insulation.

Then, it was time to take down the linoleum. The moisture had gone too far in to consider leaving it attached.

So the homeowner shut off the water, flushed the toilet, and used a sponge to remove the rest of the water from the toilet before removing the actual toilet itself.

Then it was time to remove the rest of the damaged drywall. Looking cleaner already!

This time, mold-resistant drywall was going in the old drywall's place. Based on how icky it got before, we think that was a smart choice!

Next, it was time to cut holes for the plumbing, using a Fein tool for this lovely new wood-like texture bead board going up on the wall. This naturally led to checking out what was going down below the wall — namely, the horribly stained floor.

After removing the stained linoleum, the owner test fit a new piece of linoleum to go over the other layer of flooring, which still miraculously fit well into the concrete.

Next, it was time to attach the top piece of trim to the wall above the bead board, using an air nailer to complete the step.

The homeowner specifically chose to use a plastic edging on the bead board next to the tub, in order to stop moisture from coming into the bead board. Again, super smart!

The homeowner was finally able to attach the new linoleum, using an adhesive applied with a caulking gun. The baseboard was installed with an air nailer.

The flooring installation is looking so smooth here! It's amazing what a big change it's already starting to make in the bathroom's overall appearance.

It was then time to install the remainder of the trim and for the holes to be filled with wood filler. The finishing touches really do make such a difference.

Rub a dub dub! The tub surround was finally in place, thanks to adhesive applied with a caulking gun. And the green tape came in handy for holding down spots that weren't quite flat yet.

And then the bead board finally got the paint job it deserved, with two good coats, followed by proper installation of the vanity, and the final placement of the base board and of course, the toilet.

And ta-da! The bathroom finally looked good and new. Bravo to this DIY expert and the extra mile taken to get here!
