Reddit user autounity and his girlfriend started off with a 1999 Corolla, which was given to them by friends. The car ran well and had surprisingly low miles on it considering its year. But the Corolla wasn’t perfect. It had mismatched colors of paint, as well as an unsightly layer of rust on it. So it’s totally understandable why they might have been tempted to get it professionally painted or redecorated. But instead, they were up for the challenge of doing a car makeover right in the driveway on their own.

And we’re really glad they did. For less than $100, they were able to work their magic on the automobile and transform it into any driver’s dream come true. After looking through their genius, budget-friendly process, we’re all feeling inspired to update our own cars at home, too. Who knows; after seeing the final touch, you just may be, too!

We'll admit, it wasn't all that much to look at in the beginning. Not only were the passenger doors and fender different colors from the rest of the car, the hood was also super rusty.

So this job naturally called for lots of supplies—amazingly costing less than $100 altogether.

But before they could get to the paint job, first things first: They had to start sanding the car.

As you might imagine, sanding the whole car was not an easy process. But considering what they were about to do, it was necessary.

Then, they scraped all the loose rust from the hood with a metal brush. Wow! It already looks shinier!

Next, they applied a liquid rust remover, which worked wonders on the hood. It started smoking immediately, and then easily washed away with a hose.

And then it came time to mask the windows and the lights. Gotta keep those parts protected while you're hard at work!

They managed to get the first coat of paint in on the first night, with a little help from the headlights.

They didn't love the color they woke up to the next morning, so they decided to continue coating and see what happened.

They sanded in between each coat, and after about 5 or 6 coats it finally began to come together.

But then they realized the blue was a bit bright for their liking. So they decided to add a bit of black to the mix to darken it just a tad.

The last three coats were a mix of 50/50 Royal Blue and Glossy Black colors. Then, it was time to wait and see what would happen the next day.

They were greeted by a beautiful blue color in natural light the next day. But they were still not convinced that their work was done.

So they platidipped the door handles and masked them, copying the process with the logo, with the goal of sleek black colors for those parts of the car.

Ta-da! Finally done. But to get the full effect, you just have to see the completed project next to where it started in the beginning...
