The star blanket, also known as the 6-day star blanket, is having its moment. Crochet designer Betty McKnit (Beth McKee Elliott) created the pattern as a variation of her popular 6-Day Kid Blanket. Ideally, the pattern is meant to be crocheted in six day because of its simple stitch pattern. Depending on your skill level, it may take more or less time.

“It’s a crochet blanket worked in the round from the center out,” says Vanessa Walilko, crafter, crocheter, designer, and founder of Kali Butterfly. “The increases create a star with seven points.” The fun design makes it ideal for baby gifts, home decor or your new favorite cozy accessory.

How to crochet a 6-day star blanket

Whether you’re just starting to crochet or a seasoned pro, making the 6-day star blanket shouldn’t be too difficult. The blanket pattern is adaptable; you can use any type of yarn and make it as big or small as you’d like.

“To crochet a star blanket, you’ll typically work in the round, increasing stitches at regular intervals to form the points of the star,” says Ashley Parker, professional crochet designer and author of Crochet Furry Friends. “Most patterns, including the 6-day star blanket, are worked using basic stitches like single crochet, double crochet, and chains.”

When making your blanket, Parker adds that it’s key to follow the pattern for consistent stitch placement, ensuring the points and valleys of your star are evenly spaced.

How much yarn will you need?

Regarding supplies, the amount of yarn you need depends on the size of your blanket. Walilko notes that for a 60” throw-sized blanket, you’ll need 2500 yards of worsted-weight yarn (a medium-weighted yarn that acts as an all-purpose material).

Parker says always to check the pattern for specific yarn and gauge requirements. “If you don’t match the gauge given in the pattern, you may need more yarn than what is listed.”

Get started on a crochet star blanket

While Parker notes that there are many variations of the 6-day star blanket, the starting point is similar across the board. If you need more guidance, you can find online tutorials, videos or crocheting communities. Here, Parker shares her steps to make your own star blanket:

  • Create a magic ring or chain ring: Start with a magic ring or chain to form the center of your star.
  • Chain and crochet into the Ring: Chain 3 (counts as your first double crochet) and work 11 double crochets into the ring. Pull the magic ring tight and join with a slip stitch to the top (sl st to top) of the first chain 3.
  • Form the star points: Follow the pattern to create the first round of points. This typically involves chaining, skipping stitches, and working clusters or increases.
  • Work in the round: Continue working in the round, increasing stitches in the star points and maintaining the valleys.
  • Adjust for size: Repeat the rounds in your pattern until the blanket reaches your desired size.

If you’d rather knit your star blanket over crochet, Walilko notes the difference is that you’ll have to knit the center section of the star first, then finish each of the points individually. You can also square it off by crocheting rows in between the points of the star to turn the star shape into a square.

Ready to start your crochet journey? Grab your favorite yarn and tools, and follow these tips to create a stunning star blanket that’s as unique as you are. Whether it’s for gifting, decor or snuggling, your handmade blanket is sure to become a cherished favorite.
