In need of a fireplace makeover? You’re certainly not alone. Several homeowners want to re-do their fireplace, but it’s one of those pesky home decor tasks that’s so easy to overlook when you put it off for too long. Luckily, Reddit user Seriousdudey just revealed a budget-friendly fireplace makeover.

With $90 in extra cash their pockets, these homeowners were able to take their 1970’s style fireplace to the modern day. And when you see the final product, you’ll swear that must have needed to add a few zeroes to that number. But no—they claim that all they needed was a cordless screwdriver/drill, paint, wood, and liquid nails. Don’t just take their word for it; see for yourself how this fireplace makeover came to be–and why it’s inspiring homeowners everywhere to do the same for their fireplaces.

We'll admit, the fireplace wasn't all that much to look at in the beginning. Is it any wonder why they decided to paint the paneling white before launching into the project?

Their first official step of the fireplace makeover was attaching a wider wood to the mantel. A 1”by 8” piece of plain pine lumber (that they distressed and stained to achieve a walnut color) was all they needed to create a “slipcover” on top of the mantel as it stood before.

Then, they used screws and nails to attach the new mantel to all three sides, using the super-handy Black and Decker cordless screwdriver/drill. Looks like this tool came in handy!

When all three pieces of the mantel were in place, the design really began to take shape. We're loving the look already! But their work was far from done.

The next step was to totally remove the cast iron box that the previous owners of the home had left behind. We bet that was no easy task!

Then, they painted the bricks around where the fire will eventually be with some black, heat-resistant paint. Smart choice!

They took it upon themselves to add another dimension to their project, by using Liquid Nails to attach pieces of wood and thin, luan plywood to the facade. Genius, we tell you!

As if their first extra dimension addition weren't genius enough, they went and added another dimension by gluing on different 1 by 4’s, and 1/4" by 4”s.

And then it was time for them to tape off the bricks so that they could caulk the seams and paint the wood. Coming into the home stretch!

Ta-da! Their final product really speaks volumes to the fact that a little bit of change goes a long way. Bravo to them on a job well done.
