Kitchen cabinet resurfacing is a project that nearly every homeowner thinks about from time to time when their cabinets look a little rusty. However, not everyone gets around to doing this type of remodeling, as badly needed as it might be. If that’s you, allow Reddit user ‘ILivedThe_StarWars’ to inspire you for your new kitchen makeover.

The Reddit user and his wife had lived in their home for a few years, but it became clearer and clearer that the cabinets could use a serious makeover. So rather than shell out the cash for brand new cabinets, he decided to embark on a DIY adventure and resurface each cabinet by hand. Since they already owned a paint sprayer, air compressor, and orbital sander, they only needed to spend $150 on the remaining materials. The project only took this savvy couple eight days total, as they worked only on the weekends. And the kitchen cabinet resurfacing worked wonders on their entire kitchen, totally transforming the space for the better.

We'll admit, the cabinets weren't all that much to look at in the beginning. Luckily, the "test cabinet" showed a promise of a much more sophisticated design to come.

They put the project in full swing right away, removing the cabinet doors and promptly getting to work on sanding—and removing the dust that came afterward.

Next, it was time to break out the paint and the finish. Milk paint and satin finish both seemed like wonderful choices—and oh boy, did they come through.

Then, it was time to review the three steps of preparation—the left being the stock cabinet door, the right being the sanded door, and the middle one being the door after one layer of paint. (The flat parts of the door were sanded with an orbital sander and 80 grit paper, and the detailed parts were sanded by hand with 100 grit.)

It was then time for the top cabinet frames to be painted with a sprayer, along with some minor brushing touch ups where the sprayer could not reach.

Before long, the top cabinets were done and looking shinier and sleeker than ever before.

The next order of business was doing a deep paint for the drawers, even reaching the interior, since it would be much more visible than the interior of the cabinets.

Then, it was time to stop and appreciate the difference between the painted cabinets and the drawers that had not been reached yet. Something amazing was truly about to happen here.

It didn't hurt that the work went very slowly throughout the rest of the kitchen, especially since the project only took place on weekends. It's further evidence how much effort went in to making it look magazine-worthy.

The last of the freshly painted boards were finally ready to make their debut for the picture-perfect photo op.
