Consumer Cellular Reportedly Making Big Changes to Where You Can Activate Your Phone—What to Know
The senior-friendly phone service is shifting where customers can get help with new devices.
Everyone knows there are dozens of phone providers out there offering a variety of phones and services. With options like Verizon, T-Mobile, Mint Mobile and more, figuring out which one to go with can be overwhelming—especially for seniors, who may not want all the bells and whistles that come with many smartphones and plans. Many experts recommend Consumer Cellular phones for seniors, but the service is reportedly undergoing a massive transition in its retail operations. Read on for all the details on the changes, including whether they will impact coverage for current customers.
What is Consumer Cellular? Plans, pricing and perks explained
Consumer Cellular is a wireless carrier offering no-contract plans at super-low prices: According to their website, plans can run as low as $20 a month for unlimited talk and text. The company also offers a 5 percent discount for AARP members, and they hired actor Ted Danson, 77, as a spokesperson, to get the word out about their brand.
“I am excited to be working with Consumer Cellular. The brand is reliable and affordable, and it is obvious to see why over four million customers choose their service,” Danson said in a statement back in 2022. “Consumer Cellular not only keeps their customers connected with loved ones but also works hard to keep a loyal base with great customer service. I look forward to helping them reach even more future customers.”

Currently, there are more than 50 Consumer Cellular stores nationwide, and the phones are also available at Target and Walmart, but according to online chat, that might be changing.
What to know about the changes reportedly coming to Consumer Cellular
According to several online communities centered around Consumer Cellular, the company will reportedly only be offering phone activations at Walmart from now on, not Target.
These users—many of them Target employees—say Target won’t be able to activate the phones, but workers at the electronics register can still help with standard technology issues and SIM kit purchase.
“My Target store had a sign that they only did Consumer Cellular activations on certain days and hours, but now they have a new sign that says this Target store no longer does Consumer Cellular activations,” one online user wrote.

As of publication, Consumer Cellular, Target and Walmart have not commented on the online claims. Target is currently offering Consumer Cellular products online, which you can see here.
Walmart also has an online Consumer Cellular store, where they offer SIM cards and a variety of smartphones, touting deals like $50 cashback for each new line activated
