Tax season has always been one of the most stressful times of year, as everyone hurries to fill out the proper paperwork and file the correct forms. But getting your taxes done and sent on time should not be a part of that frenzy. If you are planning to mail your tax return as opposed to filing online, read on fir everything you need to know ahead of time, including important dates, a major change to postal servies and how to properly address your envelopes so you can file stress-free.
When is the federal tax deadline?
It may come as no surprise to you, as Tax Day generally falls on the same date each year but the federal tax deadline is April 15, 2026.
However, you don’t need to wait until April to file. If you prefer to get it done ahead of time, you can file right now! Tax season officially began on January 26, 2026, so there is no need to wait. Just make sure your envelope is postmarked by the deadline.
Criteria for mailing taxes on time

Sending in your tax return via the US Postal Service is a simple process, but there are a few steps you need to complete before it’s considered finalized and on time. To send in your tax return via the mail service you must:
Make sure your envelope is properly addressed
If you’re unsure of the address, double check it on the IRS website before filling it out. Fill out both the destination and return addresses clearly or print a mailing label.
Be sure to use the correct type and amount of postage
Since most tax returns are several pages long and weigh more than 1 ounce, you’ll need to be sure you apply the correct amount of postage. You can either weigh your package on a kitchen scale or a postage scale. If you don’t have the correct amount, it will be returned to you. You can calculate the correct amount needed here.
Postmark your taxes by the deadline
This is extremely important, as the USPS has recently changed their postmark rule: The IRS will consider your taxes to be on time as long as your return is postmarked by April 15, even if they receive it after that date. According to the USPS site, “To ensure that your tax return receives a postmark on the day you mail it, ask a retail associate at a Post Office retail counter to hand-cancel it for free.”
Proof of delivery
If you want even more peace of mind, you can choose to purchase Certified or Registered Mail Service when sending your tax return. If you do, you will receive a receipt with proof of mailing your item, plus you can see when your item is delivered. Be sure to keep your receipt in a safe place, as the USPS does not keep copies.
Certain mail classes also give the option to receive USPS Tracking, a tracking number that will give you updates as your item travels. Other mailing services aside from Certified or Registered include:
- Priority Mail Express (delivered in 1-3 days, USPS Tracking)
- Priority Mail (delivered in 2-3 days, USPS Tracking)
- First-Class Mail (delivered in 1-5 days)
If you’re choosing to file your taxes via the USPS, make sure you read and understand all of the requirements. For more information, visit the USPS website.
