What is success? It’s a question that doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer. For some, success means landing that long-sought promotion and gaining recognition for hard work. For others, it’s nurturing relationships, building a home, or simply living in alignment with personal values. However, success isn’t always about life’s big moments and milestones.

How people define success on Reddit

Success can be the first vegetable to grow in your garden, finishing a project you’ve been putting off doing around the house or sticking to a healthy lifestyle change you’ve struggled with. In a viral thread shared on Reddit, the original poster asked people to define success. “I’ve been thinking about success a lot lately, and what it means to me,” they wrote. “I’m not there yet, but when I do get there, how will I know? What will it look like? Will I feel different? While it’s one word, it means something different to everyone. I’m curious to know what it means to you?”

“To me, success is not a destination, but a direction,” wrote one user. “I would consider myself successful after being able to afford all necessities in life, like a good house, food, healthcare etc. Having a great group of friends, a serious relationship and a healthy mind and body. Having a purpose and doing meaningful work is what I would do after that, but that’s more like a bonus. Being on that last level and staying there, while keeping the hard work would be success for me.”

Why success looks different for everyone

“Success can have different meanings depending on the individual, their goals, and their values,” wrote another user. “To me, success means achieving my personal and professional goals while maintaining a balance in my life. It means being able to make a positive impact on the world and the people around me, while also finding fulfillment and satisfaction in my own life.”

Another said, “I would define success as: Your financial performance aligns with your life’s aspirations. You work on something that you’re passionate about. You have agency to decide how you spend the majority of your time. The vast majority of your time is spent being happy and content.”

Ultimately, success is personal. It’s not about meeting society’s expectations but about aligning your life with your values and finding fulfillment. Whether it’s achieving career milestones, nurturing relationships, or simply finding joy in small moments, only you can define what success looks like for yourself.
