Don’t Toss that Bouquet Yet! 7 Genius Ways to Turn Fading Petals Into Gorgeous Budget Treasures
Unlock the secret to "forever flowers" with these simple DIY crafts and spa-inspired beauty tips
Whether you received (or gifted yourself!) a beautiful bouquet for Valentine’s Day, a birthday or just because, you can extend the joy when the petals start to fade! That’s right, there are plenty of ways to put your flowers to good use, from creating crafts to incorporating them into your beauty routine. Wondering what to do with leftover flowers? Below we share some of the best ideas for repurposing your blooms.
How to dry flowers for permanent home decor
Ready to enjoy your blooms forever? It’s easy to preserve them, but it does require some waiting! The trick to pressed flowers: Spread an 11″ x 17″ piece of newspaper on a flat surface. Place trimmed blooms on the right half of the paper, leaving plenty of space between flowers.
Then fold the left side of the paper over the flowers to make an 81⁄2″ x 11″ sheaf. Place the newspaper sheaf with the flowers in the center of a large heavy book, like a dictionary. This book-press method can take as little as seven days, but it’s typically for flowers to take a couple of weeks to fully dry. The wait is worth it—you’ll have perfectly preserved blooms that last for years!
If you’re interested in only drying your leftover flowers and not pressing them, you can go with the inverted method. Here’s how to do it:
- Remove damaged or browning petals and strip off most of the leaves.
- Cut stems to a manageable length (usually 8-12 inches).
- Tie 3 to 5 stems together with twine, string or a rubber band.
- Hang the bundle(s) upside down in a dark and dry place.
Once they’re fully dry, you can use them for decorating or crafting!
Fun ways to use your leftover flowers
Make your own fragrant potpourri
This classic fragrant mixture has long been a delightful way to add a pleasant aroma to your home, and you can make your own with leftover blooms!
Lora McLaughlin Peterson, a lifestyle expert and television host who shares how to live a fabulous life for less, shares her easy how-to: Crumble dry flower petals into a bowl, add 1 tsp. of baking soda (it helps absorb odors) and a few drops of essential oil like lemon or lavender. Place the bowl in closets or bathrooms to keep them smelling fresh.
Create charming pressed flower candleholders
Give your upcoming springtime gatherings an upgrade with low-cost candleholders that incorporate beautiful flowers. Simply use the instructions above to preserve them, then use double-sided tape to affix the pressed flowers to the outside of white paper bags. Pour 2 inches of sand inside the bag to keep it from toppling and nestle a battery-operated tea light into the sand. The glowing decor is sure to impress at evening get-togethers.
Soothe puffy eyes with homemade rosewater
Rosewater is a beauty secret that’s been treasured for generations. One perk is that it has diuretic properties, which makes it an ideal solution for easing under-eye puffiness. But you don’t have to shell out for a bottle at the store—if you have leftover roses, you can make your own.
To do: Add 1 cup of rose petals to a pot, submerging them in enough water to cover. Bring to a simmer, then turn heat to low until petals lose most of their color. Strain the water into a lidded jar and let cool. Soak cotton pads in the liquid and place over closed eyes for 5 minutes; remove and rinse.
You’ll look and feel refreshed in no time!
Craft gift wrap with dried petals
The next time you need to wrap presents, you’ll want to use this homemade gift wrap that is gorgeous and budget friendly!
Simply scatter dried petals between two sheets of parchment paper and gently iron them flat (set the iron heat to low), explains Peterson. Let cool, then tape or glue the flowers to kraft paper for a one-of-a-kind gift that’s sure to delight.
Design a floating flower centerpiece

Give your bouquet a second life by turning the flowers into a stunning centerpiece! Just set the flowers afloat in a water-filled compote or dessert cup, then set on a countertop or table. It’s a beautiful display that will brighten the room.
Press flowers into beautiful bookmarks
Book lovers will appreciate using flowers to craft a beautiful bookmark! To do: Cut two rectangles from a sheet of clear plastic. Then use white glue to attach a row of pressed flowers to one of the cut sheets. Let dry completely, top each flower with a dot of glue and press the other plastic sheet on top. Place it under a book and let dry. As a final step, thread a ribbon through a hole punched in the top.
No plastic sheets on hand? Use a leftover photo-album page!
Pamper yourself with a floral body scrub
Enjoy a spa-like experience at home for a fraction of the cost. All you need is flowers and some pantry staples.
The secret: Crush dried flower petals and mix with enough sugar and coconut oil to form a soft scrub, says Peterson. The flower petals add gentle exfoliation—and a pretty scent—leaving you with smooth, sweet-smelling skin.
Whether you’re crafting keepsakes to treasure, pampering yourself with homemade beauty treats, or creating heartfelt gifts for loved ones, know that you’re making the most of every petal.
