Grumpy Cat, the kitty celebrity whose permanent frown captivated the internet, has died after complications arose from a urinary tract infection at the age of 7.
In a statement on Instagram, Grumpy Cat’s family confirmed the sad news that she had died on the morning of May 14, 2019 in the arms of her “mommy,” owner Tabatha Bundesen.
“We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat. Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome. She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha. Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile around the world — even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
Born in Arizona in 2012, her given name was Tardar Sauce before she was discovered. She first rose to fame six years ago when her owner posted a picture to Reddit of her signature facial expression, simply captioned, “Meet grumpy cat.” Before long, humans all over the world began to use that image to express their own “grumpy” feelings with witty captions such as: “I had fun once. It was awful.”
But her fame wasn’t limited to online humor. According to the New York Times, the official Grumpy Cat shop has featured 900 items with her likeness. She’s appeared on a TV ad for Honey Nut Cheerios, starred in a Lifetime Christmas movie called Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, and even made the cover of New York Magazine.
Her famous sneer was the result of feline dwarfism, according to her human family members. But despite her perpetual scowl, her personality couldn’t have been more opposite, according to her official website. “She really isn’t grumpy,” her owners previously wrote on her website. “She is a super cute and cuddly kitty and loves to be held and rubbed.”
We’re keeping Grumpy Cat’s family and fans in our thoughts during this tough time.
