Wife Tells Husband Puppy Is Jack Russell, But Then Dog Grows Into Its True Breed

Tags:

See that tiny doggy above? Sue Markham of Lincolnshire, England, couldn’t resist him. She and her husband Robert were in the market for a new pet, but there was a big problem with this particular pooch: Robert didn’t want a large dog, and that little ball of fluff, whom they named Yogi but they usually call Bear, wouldn’t stay little for long. He’s actually a Great Dane.

Rather than pass up the pup, Sue lied about Bear’s background, claiming he was a Jack Russell terrier, a small breed. Robert fell for it, and the couple welcomed the 1 lb., 5 oz. cutie into their home. Pretty soon, though, the jig was up. The fib “started to become fairly obvious when Bear dwarfed any other dogs in the village,” the 57-year-old grandmother of four told DailyMail.com. Luckily for Sue, it didn’t matter: Robert was head over heels.

Now nine years old, the Great Dane is living up to its name. He weighs a whopping 210 pounds and is 6’10 long. He eats about $250 of food each month and sports a coat designed for horses on chilly days. He takes up both seats on the couple’s two-seater couch in their modest living room, and has his own three-acre area for playing. Best of all, his heart is just as big.

“Last winter, an old female cat we call Toffee started coming in the house for warmth…We thought Bear wouldn’t be a fan, but instead he welcomed her onto his sofa and they often curl up and sleep together…Bear sees Toffee as his own pet,” says Sue.

Adds Robert, “He’s a very good-natured dog with a lot of character so it would be hard for anyone not to love him or be angry with him.”
