Everyone is trying to avoid getting sick, especially with coronavirus (COVID-19) lurking on top of all the other icky illnesses being spread around. Being vigilant about washing our hands for at least 20 seconds is one of the best ways to shield ourselves, but all that scrubbing can take a toll on our poor skin.

While a little dry skin is usually nowhere near as bad as nasty cold and flu symptoms, it can still cause painful problems, such as cracking, peeling, and even bleeding — especially on our hands. It’s notably awful if you’re already prone to skin issues like eczema and start amping up the soap (you can get a whole gallon of Dial Gold Antimicrobial Soap for $19.05, Amazon) and water in your daily routine.

You can try at-home solutions like slathering your hands in Vaseline ($6.62, Amazon) and sticking them in a pair of gloves like EvridWear Beauty Cotton Gloves ($22.99 for 6 pairs, Amazon) for a few hours or even overnight, but we wanted to find clinically-proven products we can count on to really seep into our skin and bring it back to life. According to Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, FAAD, from Modern Dermatology of Connecticut, you can get just that from each of the lotions, creams, and ointments shown below:

1. ISDIN Uradin Lotion

ISDIN Uradin Lotion
Amazon

Where to buy: $33, Amazon

[This lotion] sinks in fast and instantly not only soothes dryness, but gives the hands a rejuvenated appearance,” Dr. Robinson explains. “The formulation has 10 percent urea, [which] retains water in the skin.”

2. Vanicream Vaniply Ointment

Dermstore

Robinson claims this ultra-hydrating product is “perfect for spot treating on the knuckles and dry cracked areas.”

Neutrogena Hydro Boost

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Hand Cream
Walmart

Where to buy: $4.93, Walmart

“This [gel cream] is a great one to keep in your purse, car, or bag — it is fast absorbing and the hyaluronic acid helps skin retain moisture and support the skin’s lipid barrier,” Robinson tells us.

4. Aveeno Skin Relief Hand Cream

Aveeno Skin Relief Hand Cream
Amazon

Where to buy: $6.88, Amazon

Robinson recommends this for anyone also dealing with eczema. “It is formulated with colloidal oatmeal, [which] helps heal dry skin and forms a protective barrier against the elements.”

Now you have everything you need to keep your hands happy, hydrated, and germ-free all year round!
