Does Salma Hayek have an aging portrait in her attic, à la Dorian Gray? Doing press for her latest film, the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, the gorgeous 55-year-old actress looks as youthful as when she first graced a movie screen. So, did she just luck out in the good genes department, or does she have a secret that we, too, can get in on? (Preferably one that doesn’t involve selling our soul.)

While Hayek has her own line of skin and hair care products, called Nuance (you can find it on Amazon), if you don’t want to fork over $85 for her anti-aging cream, she revealed the secret ingredient she used to formulate it in a 2015 interview with Elle. ““I use an ingredient called tepezcohuite that’s used in Mexico for burn victims because it completely regenerates the skin,” she said, adding that she’s never had Botox, peels, or fillers to smooth her glowing skin.

At the time, Hayek said no one else in the United States was using the ingredient, sourced from the tepezcohuite tree, which grows primarily in Central and South America and is also known as the mimosa tenuiflora, calumbi, or binho de jurema tree. Whatever name it goes by, it’s long been believed to have medicinal properties. Traditional healers have used its bark and fern-like leaves to treat burns and ulcers of the skin, as well as to halt the signs of aging.

A study from 2016, published in scientific journal PLoS One, confirmed that the tannins in the tree’s bark contain anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which is probably why it helps heal wounds and soothe skin. “Some of the ingredients, when I took them to the American labs, they were like ‘Oh my god! How come nobody is using this?’” the noted animal-lover told Elle.

Well, if they weren’t then, they are now! Indio Papago’s Crema de Tepezcohuite is on sale for less than $10 on Amazon right now — so you can try this old-school balm for yourself! (It’s also available at Walmart, currently priced at $12.69.)
