9 Things to Keep in Mind When Revamping Your Bedroom Design

Tags:

Ah, the bedroom. The room where you’ll spend almost half of your life, and you won’t even be conscious enough to remember it. Creating a cozy and comfortable bedroom is an often overlooked part of styling your home, but why should it be? We’ve pulled together nine of the most common bedroom styling mistakes and faux pas to avoid to help you transform your bedroom into the perfect escape.

Overflowing Closet

Having an open and utterly disorganized closet gives the appearance a hurricane has blown through! Think about the amount and style of storage you actually need and invest in a quality closet with the right amount of space for your belongings. Hang your clothes up and take the time to place items in their designated spots with clever closet storage solutions. After all, there’s nothing better than having a place for everything and everything in its place.

Dated Pictures

Still have your Star Wars or AC/DC poster hanging on the wall? It could be time to upgrade (or well past that time). Invest in some quality artworks that tie in with your bedroom color scheme and show off your personality. It’s best to opt for art that is not too busy in its design, and also to be conscious of the colors you select as they can have a surprising impact on your mood. Dark colors can help create a cozy atmosphere, while yellow, orange, and the occasional pink can help give you energy.

Messy Desk

Wherever possible, don’t keep your desk in your bedroom — ideally sleep and work spaces should be separate. Of course, this isn’t always realistic. So if your home office has to be in your bedroom keep it neat and clutter free. A clear desk is a clear mind!

Keeping Stuffed Animals

Sure, everyone loves a cuddle. But an arrangement of toy plushies on your bed after a certain age might say “arrested development” more than “whimsical sweetheart”.

Not Having a Laundry Hamper

Keeping a pile of dirty clothes on the floor is the fastest way to make an otherwise tidy space look messy. Plus, we won’t get started on the smell… Purchase a neutral-colored laundry hamper that’ll blend into your room and tuck them away. Out of sight, out of mind.

Not Balancing Your Color Scheme

Unless you’re a professional stylist or interior designer, loads of different clashing colors in a room is very hard to pull off. Try keeping the big spaces (walls, ceiling, floor, and cabinets) a neutral color like white, cream, tan, or pale gray. Then use your favorite color to add pops of blue, pink, or green in areas like art, cushions, and lamps. A neutral base also means it’s really easy to refresh your space with a new color palette by simply swapping out your styling accessories and homewares for something new.

Old, Raggedy Sheets

The wear and tear of sheets is inevitable — you use them everyday after all! Investing in new bed linen is a good idea not only for your health, but to freshen up your bedroom. Plus, nothing beats the feeling of jumping into fresh sheets.

No Headboard

The head of the bed is the focal point of any bedroom, but it’s often overlooked depending on the style of bed frame you’ve chosen. If you prefer to go without a headboard, add a piece of artwork or a colored or textured feature wall behind the bed to draw the eye.

Not Showing Your Personality

This is the most important part of styling your bedroom! It’s your space — you will be in it the most. Choose design elements that make you feel as happy and relaxed as possible. Whether your style is industrial, coastal, or vintage antiques, fill your space with things that make you smile and put you in a good mood as you retreat into a state of slumber.
