Camellia Oil Is the Centuries-Old Secret to Ageless Skin — Here’s How to Use It

Tags:

Ancient cultures had a lot to say about beauty, and while there are plenty of expensive products you could go out and spend your money on, why not turn back to the old wisdom and save yourself some cash? In that effort, we bring you camellia oil, one of Japan’s most valued hidden secrets to ageless beauty.

What is camellia oil?

Camellia oil (also referred to as “tea seed” oil) is native to Japan and has been used historically for both skin and hair care. The oil itself is extracted from the camellia flower, or the tsubaki flower as it’s called in Japan. Coco Chanel was a huge fan of the camellia flower and used it in many of her designs, as it is a symbol of longevity and purity. It is also said that camellia oil was the hidden beauty secret of the ageless Geishas in Japanese culture.

Camellia Oil for Skin

The reason that camellia oil might have been revered by the Geishas is because it’s rich in essential vitamins and minerals as well as oleic acid (also found in olive oil) and omega-9 fats, all of which benefit skin, hair, and nail health. Camellia oil is also a great emollient, making it a nourishing moisturizer for dry or damaged hair and skin.

Camellia oil is also a natural source of antioxidants and vitamins like vitamin A and B. The antioxidant composition of the oil is probably the most notable reason for its anti-aging abilities, as these help to improve skin elasticity, nourish skin cells, and prevent the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. It’s also very useful against sun damage!

The best part about using camellia oil is that it’s a light oil, so it provides your skin with just the right amount of moisture and won’t clog your pores. This means you can use it both underneath makeup during the day and when you go to sleep at night. To use, simply dab a few drops on your face and massage well into the skin. You can also use camellia oil as a hair mask for strong, shiny locks by applying some of the oil from root to tip about an hour before you wash your hair, or overnight. If you’re leaving the oil on overnight, be sure to shampoo thoroughly in the morning.

You can purchase camellia oil online. Personally, I like this one from Botanical Beauty ($9.95, Amazon).
