Choosing a fragrance that suits your personality can be a bit like finding a needle in a haystack — particularly when you’re shopping online. After all, how do you decide which top notes — aka a perfume’s strongest scent — are right for you? Or whether your sniffer will respond better to Turkish rose or bergamot? And What the heck does golden amber even smell like, anyway? That’s where celebrity perfumes come in.

Chances are you’ve never met your favorite star, be it Jennifer Aniston or Elizabeth Taylor. Still, you probably know enough about them to infer what kind of vibe their perfumes might give off. If you guessed that Aniston — the quintessential beach gal — might attempt to bottle the scent of ocean breeze and salt water, for instance, let’s just say you wouldn’t be too far off. Taylor’s signature scents, meanwhile, are every bit as luxe as you might imagine the late starlet to have been.

By identifying certain personality traits in others that you identify with, it will be easy to find your celebrity fragrance twin.

How to Choose a Perfume

Your perfume should be just as individual as you are, so there’s no hard and fast rule about how to go about choosing the right one.

“Fragrance preference is often rooted in familiarity,” Pinrose founder Christine Luby told The Cut in 2015. “If you smell an oud [(a common bases note)] and have never worn one before, it’s not that you don’t like it, it’s that your nose is learning.”

Not only does the scent you choose reflect your personality, your body’s skin type and PH balance will make it smell differently on you than it does on anyone else. “I think it’s interesting that a perfume will smell different on one arm to another arm and also who sort of responds to certain ones,” Aniston told People in 2017.

Experts also recommend avoiding heavily-scented areas, like a department store aisle, in order to give your nose a chance to “reset.” In addition, it’s also a good idea to test scents out with samplers and wear them around for a while before making your final decision.

The Best Celebrity Fragrance

It seems like just about every celebrity has a scent line these days, but some, like Sarah Jessica Parker and Celine Dion, have managed to stand the test of time with their best-selling franchises. Keep reading for Woman’s World’s picks for the best celebrity perfumes around and find out which one suits your personality best.

For the Beach Goddess

Jennifer Aniston by Jennifer Aniston

Where to buy: $32 (Originally $40), Kohl’s

If you’d rather be at the beach, you’re in good company. Jennifer Aniston loves the ocean breeze so much, she captured its scent with her perfume empire, which she debuted in 2011. Filled with golden amber, sandalwood, sensual musk, wild violet, and blooming jasmine, the Friends alum described her fragrances, including her first eponymous scent, to People as having “a little bit more of a California beach girl vibe.” Better yet, it’s available in a 2.9-ounce bottle as part of a gift set with her 2014 fragrance, J by Jennifer Aniston.

For the Hopeless Romantic

Jane Seymour Her Open Heart

Where to buy: $24.99, AmeriMark

Hopeless romantics will want to open their hearts — and their bathroom cabinets — to Jane Seymour’s Her Open Heart. Launched in 2017, this dreamy pick was inspired by the Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman’s own backyard. “We took all the smells in the garden — and I have everything from giant redwoods, to very aromatic roses, and gardenias, and scented flowers, and lavender, and fruit trees and the smell of the ocean — you name it, and it’s all there,” she told People at launch time. The result? An intoxicating blend of pear, peony, vanilla, cashmere wood, and suede.

It includes a jewelry wrap holder with three compartments for your belongings and comes in an intricately-designed, heart-covered bottle that Seymour said is a hallmark of love itself. “This really represents a universal symbol of giving and receiving love,” she told the publication. “If you close your heart off you can’t receive, you can’t give. If you have an open heart you can meet the challenges, move forward in life, grow and connect with people.”

For the Minimalist

Lovely Sarah Jessica Parker

Where to buy: $54.99, HSN

For some, less is more, and that’s exactly what you’ll get with Sarah Jessica Parker’s premiere 2005 fragrance, Lovely. Though the actress now has five perfumes under her belt, including SJP NYC, Stash, Covet, and Born Lovely, it’s this subtle scent one that minimalists like yourself will love. “Lovely just feels more mature,” Parker told Refinery 29 in 2018.

Blending mandarin orange, bergamot, lavender, martini, and white pepper scents, this French-made pick is described by reviewers as “soft,” “fresh,” and “light.” Wrote one: “It isn’t the type that is overpowering, it just lingers gently.”

For the Sophisticate

Céline Dion All for Love

Where to buy: $27, Amazon

If you’re wise and worldly, like the great Canadian songbird, you won’t have to browse too long to find your perfect perfume match. Dion’s whopping 17 scents, which she created in collaboration with American beauty company Coty, are a direct reflection of her sophisticated nature. Take her most recent release, All for Love. It’s got a grown-up floral and woody smell courtesy of fresh greens, mandarin, and freesia that reviewers describe as being a “subtle and sophisticated rosy scent.”

For the Glamour Girl

Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds

Where to buy: $69, HSN

Elizabeth Taylor was a glamour girl through and through. If you appreciate the finer things in life, take a cue from the Cleopatra star and relish in her beloved White Diamonds fragrance. A staple on women’s vanities for more than 25 years, this scent is one of most successful franchises of all time, and for good reason: It’s every bit as opulent as the late Taylor herself! Amazon lily and Italian neroli are at its heart, while notes of Egyptian tuberose, narcisse, Turkish rose, jasmine, patchouli, and sandalwood serve to round out this luxury find.
