The Sweet Reason Dolly Parton Dresses Up Every Day Might Surprise You

Tags:

Dolly Parton may have taken style tips from the town trollop in her younger years (keep reading for the details on that), but the real reason she dresses up every day — even when there are no cameras around — may surprise you.

According to a recent interview with E! News, the country music legend says she always wants to look good for her husband of 55 years, Carl Thomas Dean: “Every day, I put on some makeup and fix my hair because I think, ‘I’m out here and everybody else sees me all dressed up, and I’m not going to … go home and just flop on him!”

Where did Dolly Parton get her style inspiration?

In an interview for the WIRED Autocomplete series in 2020, Parton said that growing up, she wanted to look like the local floozy who walked around wearing dresses and high heels. “The grownups called her ‘trash’, but I thought she was just beautiful, and I wanted to look like her when I got older. ” Apparently, this local lady had it all: makeup, big hair, tight clothes — and Dolly went ahead and adopted that style for herself.

Parton will be the first person to admit that many of her fashion and beauty choices are, well, fake. The nails she wears to cover up the fact that she has “short, stubby hands,” (as she said in this video for Allure in 2020), the wigs to make her hair higher, and the costume jewelry she’s known for giving away to people who admire it are all part of the iconic look we all love — a look that she’s defended over the years.

“Nobody wants to make out with a slouch!”

Whether Dolly Parton dresses up every day or not, there’s no disguising the genuine, down-to-earth spirit that shines through the glitter for everyone to see. And she knows her husband loves her, inside and out — even if they do get sick of each other once in a while.

And, as Parton told E! News, although she likes to look good for Carl, she dresses up just as much for herself as she does for him. “He would love me either way,” she told them, “but it’s important to me that I look as good as I can,” She added, “Nobody wants to make out with a slouch!”

Dolly might dress up for her husband, but she obviously enjoys it herself, as well. Our takeaway? The more we do things that make us happy, the happier our lives tend to be — including our relationships!
