Starting off as a traditional high school comedy-drama, 1988’s Heathers takes a decidedly dark turn that instantly elevates it to cult classic. That’s helped in no small way by the cast of Heathers, who brings to life this story about a popular — but cruel — clique of girls named Heather and one named Veronica, the latter of whom disapproves of their treatment of other students.

When group leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) is accidentally poisoned, Veronica (Winona Ryder) quickly comes to realize that her new boyfriend, J.D. (Christian Slater), is systematically murdering people he doesn’t like, and he seems to have set his sites on Chandler replacement, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty), who, it should be noted, Veronica doesn’t have much use for either.

Thoughts on Heathers: “In my first meeting, I said, ‘I will do this movie for no money and I will do it even if it never comes out. I just want to say these words.’ It’s still a script I read a lot, and it’s still a movie I watch a lot. My character, Veronica — she’s my idol.”

Thoughts on Heathers: I’d never read anything as subversive and kind of dark as this. I pretty much was, like, ‘Give me any role in this movie. I just want to be in this movie. I think it will be something that is completely different to anything that’s existing’ — and I guess I was right.”
