The One Beauty Tip from Dolly Parton That No One Should Follow

Tags:

Dolly Parton is one of the most gorgeous people on the planet (inside and out), but there’s one beauty tip from the country queen that we should all probably skip.

No, we aren’t talking about any of the surgical enhancements she’s been open about getting over the years. Instead, when the New York Times asked about her skincare routine, Parton revealed that she doesn’t bother washing her makeup off before going to bed.

“I clean my face in the mornings,” she explained. “You never know if you’re going to wreck the bus, you never know if you’re going to be somewhere in a hotel and there’s going to be a fire. So I leave my makeup on at night and clean my face in the morning.”

Although we never thought we’d disagree with Parton about anything, sleeping in makeup is one of those cardinal beauty rules we really shouldn’t ever break — even if we don’t wear quite as much as she usually does. It’s not just the potential of ruining our pillowcases with mascara smudges, either. Neglecting to wipe off makeup before hitting the hay can seriously mess with our skin.

Sue Ann Wee, MD, a dermatologist with the Schweiger Dermatology Group, told Well+Good, “Makeup can trap dirt and environmental pollutants inside the skin, and this type of environmental stress can result in increased free radicals which can cause DNA mutations, collagen degradation, and, over time, can result in premature aging.”

We certainly don’t want all our anti-aging efforts to backfire on us while we snooze, right? Plus, sleeping in makeup can cause more problems like blemishes and frustrating skin irritation, too. All of which can easily be avoided with a simple rinse! (Psst: Check out our favorite makeup removers for women over 50 for some great options.)

Ironically, despite probably never seeing Dolly Parton with no makeup, she does admit that she often goes without a wig when she’s off the clock — but we’d bet she keeps at least one hair piece nearby in case of emergencies.
