Dolly Parton Says She and Burt Reynolds Were Like ‘Brother and Sister’

Tags:

Most of us think of Dolly Parton as a legendary country singer — and she is — but we would be remiss if we didn’t also mention her serious acting chops. She’s had many memorable roles over the years, including a part opposite the late Burt Reynolds in the 1982 classic The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The pair formed such a special bond during filming that Parton says they were like siblings.

“Burt and I were a good ol’ boy and girl, and I was very sad when he passed away — we were really very much alike,” Parton told the British tabloid Daily Mirror. “But he had not been in good health for a long time and so I hope he’s resting in peace. I’m sure he is. The last years of his life he had some really hard times. We were kind of like brother and sister.”

When Reynolds died on September 6, 2018, Parton posted a tribute to the late actor on her Instagram. “Oh how sad I am today along with Burt‘s millions of fans around the world as we mourn one of our favorite leading men,” she wrote. “I know we will always remember his funny laugh, that mischievous sparkle in his eyes, and his quirky sense of humor. You will always be my favorite sheriff, rest in peace my little buddy and I will always love you, Dolly.”

Despite their on-screen chemistry, Parton said things could get tense between the two. “Burt and I had our little arguments and little spats,” she admitted. “But we were so honest with each other, in the same way Kenny Rogers and I are. We held no secrets from each other, we couldn’t fool each other.”

Reynolds wasn’t shy about his love for Parton, either. During an episode of BBC Radio’s Chris Evans Breakfast Show in 2015, Reynolds joked about Parton, saying, “I got to work with her for so long that eventually I was looking at her face.”

It’s heartwarming to see Reynolds’ friends and family keeping his memory alive — and we couldn’t think of a classier act to do it than Dolly Parton.
