It’s Dolly Parton’s 75th Birthday and Tennessee Is Getting a Statue in Her Honor
Today is Dolly Parton’s 75th birthday and we can’t think of a more fitting tribute than building a giant statue in her honor. Although most of us may lack the space, construction materials, or technical skill to do that ourselves, her home state of Tennessee is hoping to place one right outside the State Capitol.
State Representative John Mark Windle introduced the idea in a bill last week and said, “At this point in history, is there a better example, not just in America but in the world, of a leader that is a kind, decent, passionate human being?” He added, ”[Parton] is a passionate person who loves everyone and everyone loves her.”
You can’t argue with that! Windle also told local reporters that Parton is a perfect example of the “kind, compassionate nature of Tennesseans” and that “she has contributed so much and sacrificed so much of her time to so many great causes.”
We’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t agree — or think of Parton as an actual angel. It’s not just her heavenly music, but the fact that she’s always looking for ways to support others, like her generous donation to one of the Covid-19 vaccines.
Of course, that’s just the most recent example of her good deeds. Parton’s charity, the Imagination Library, has been sending free books to kids since 1996 — and her Tennessee theme park, Dollywood, not only provides family-friendly fun, but also hundreds of jobs for those in the area.
The bill recommends the statue be situated so that Parton’s likeness faces Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, where she’s performed many times. The money to build it would also be provided by gifts, grants, and other donations known as the Dolly Parton Fund, not taxpayer dollars.
This won’t be the first statue built in her honor, though. A life-sized bronze version of Parton was placed in Sevier County (where she grew up) back in 1987. It’s located right near the county courthouse and shows a youthful Parton sitting on a rock with her guitar and a big smile on her face.
If it were up to us, we’d put a statue of Parton in every town across the country (and the globe), but she’s certainly more than earned a couple in her home state.
