Couples Married More Than 40 Years Share Secrets to Long-Lasting Love in New Netflix Series
Most married couples will tell you there’s no universal secret to long-lasting love — each one has their own special formula. A new series from Netflix proves just that with a look at six sweet pairs from around the world who have all been together for more than 40 years.
Film crews followed couples from the US, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Korea, and India for the show, My Love: Six Stories of True Love. Each episode spans a year, covering big celebratory milestones and quiet moments of everyday life together.
“While producing [the series], the common thing we discovered amongst the six couples who have loved each other for a long time was their sense of humor and compassion towards each other,” director Jin Moyoung said in a press release. “Humor was an important bridge that opened the door for them to communicate truthfully. And understanding each other with a warm heart seemed like the key to their life-long journey towards happiness. By being able to communicate with each other authentically, these couples have been able to lead a peaceful life.”
In the trailer below, one of the couples, Ginger and David from the US, offer a simple key to their own love story: “Somebody asked me the secret to a long marriage,” Ginger begins. David finishes, “We’re still nice to each other.” Satyabhama and Satva, from India, also melt our hearts by saying, “Our bond extends beyond this lifetime. We walk shoulder to shoulder.”

Along with the look at long-lasting relationships, the series highlights the hurdles of growing older. A review from IndieWire explains that health scares and chronic issues are “an unavoidable throughline, with many subjects confronted with the gradual difficulties of maintaining their accepted way of life.” But the way each couple handles those situations with their combined strength also becomes another testament to their enduring love.
