To say that award-winning singer, actress, and Woman’s World cover star Patti LaBelle is a legend and icon would be an understatement. But no matter how many people she meets and how busy she is, she always makes time for family — including her ex-husband, Armstead Edwards.

LaBelle and Edwards were married from 1969 until their divorce in 2003, and although many people don’t always have the nicest things to say about their exes, LaBelle is the exception. In fact, Edwards is still very much an active part of her life. “I was married for 34 years to a man that I met when I was a young kid, and we were married for as long as that, liking each other,” she tells Woman’s World. “We fell out of love, but we like each other, and we’re best of friends now; he lives about 20 minutes from me and he comes over.  He’s coming over for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our relationship is tight.”

While LaBelle says they’ll never be together romantically again, she appreciates their strong relationship and the bond they share, even almost two decades after getting divorced. “This is my life, and the way I live it is never make enemy with your partner,” she explains. “Why should you end up enemies after you’ve had 34 years together? We’re buddies, and he gives me great advice still.  So, I’ve not let that relationship go.” It’s wonderful that that pair still have a solid friendship, even all of these years later.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to pick up the latest issue of our magazine, Woman’s World, (buy on newsstands now or on Magazine Shop, $3.49) where Patti LaBelle talks about finding her passions in life, figuring out how to spend her time in the pandemic, and more.
