Can You Spot the Real Diamond Ring?
Are you able to tell if a jewel is a real or fake diamond? We’d all like to say that we could confidently answer “yes” to that question, but sometimes it’s a little trickier than you might think.
The insurance company Hiscox in the United Kingdom came up with a clever way for us all to put our eyes to the test and see if we can tell a real diamond from a phony. As part of a quiz that challenges us to find counterfeit items, the company asks us, “Can you spot the authentic diamond ring?”
Well, can you?

If you’re scratching your head right now, you’re not alone. Without question, both the rings look positively lovely. We’d probably have a hard time saying no to receiving either one in real life!
The bad news is that this is a trick question. But the good news is that the “trick” is that both of the diamonds are actually real!
The company explains it as such: Both are genuine, but the first ring features man-made diamonds. Indistinguishable from mined diamonds, the only big difference with these “cultured diamonds” is that they were grown in a lab. The second ring, on the other hand, is a vintage diamond ring with naturally mined diamonds.
The only way you can tell if diamonds are cultured is by using specialized equipment, but lab-grown diamonds should always come with a certificate of origin. Hiscox suggests that when buying vintage diamonds, you should always ask to see an independent gem report so you know exactly where the jewel is coming from before you put it on your finger.
As Marilyn Monroe once said, diamonds are a girl’s best friend — and we should all know our best friends like the back of our hands (literally)!
