You’ll Never Guess 2019’s Most Popular Baby Names (So Far)

Tags:

As someone who grew up with one of the most common names for girls my age — I was one of five Jessicas in my class — I’ve always been drawn to more unique monikers. According to Nameberry’s calculations for the most popular names of 2019 (so far), plenty of soon-to-be parents are feeling the same way.

The website based their results on the name pages that have garnered the most searches and views in the first few months of the year. Although it’s pretty early to call out which ones will ultimately be the most popular, it’s interesting to see what people are currently drawn to. The top five names reflect a new wave of classic yet creative names:

Top 5 Girl Names for 2019

  1. Posie
  2. Isla
  3. Olivia
  4. Aurora
  5. Maeve

Top 5 Boy Names for 2019

  1. Milo
  2. Jasper
  3. Atticus
  4. Theodore
  5. Asher

Nameberry has already gotten over 11 million views for 2019, so these choices are certainly in consideration for plenty of new parents. But what’s really astonishing, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA), Olivia is the only one on the 2019 list that appears in the top 100 most popular names of the last 100 years, ranking at 68. (Mary and James are number one, FYI.) On Nameberry, which does tend to report more unique names, Olivia and Atticus, now at number three, were number one in 2018. BabyCenter, on the other hand, reported that Sophia and Jackson were the top names of 2018. We’ll have to wait for the official SSA numbers to be released to confirm.

Either way, it seems that parents are turning over a naming leaf in 2019, with a ton of new names gaining popularity. It’s anyone’s guess as to why people have been drawn to floral-inspired Posie or fairy-tale-like Aurora, but they’re both charming choices. As for Milo, there’s a good chance actor Milo Ventimiglia and the show This Is Us has something to do with it becoming a trendy option. That said, whether these names are actually given to enough babies born this year to keep them in top slots remains to be seen. Keep an eye out for any baby Islas, Jaspers, or Ashers popping up in your social media feeds!

Who knows, maybe even Meghan Markle will choose one of these for the royal baby due any day now. Princess Posie has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
