3 Secrets to Longer-Lasting Hair Color That Will Transform Dull Strands

Does your hair lose its luster too quickly after a refresh? Turns out, some of the hair products and tools we regularly use can alter our new hair color. Here, discover easy ways to ensure the hue of your strands stays fresh for months.

Altered color? Swap your leave-in.

We rely on leave-in conditioner to soften and detangle knotty hair, but added colorants in these sprays can absorb into hair and shift its shade. Instead, try a clear formula, like dpHUE Color Fresh The Leave-In Mist (Buy from Sephora, $28). The colorless spray’s shea butter and argan oil leave hair silky-smooth without disrupting its color.

Faded color? Add a heat protectant.

The harsh heat of hot tools not only dries out hair, it also opens its cuticles, allowing dye molecules to escape. To help, prep hair with a thermal protection spray like L’ange Rival Heat Shield (Buy from Lange Hair, $23), which contains cuticle-sealing chamomile extract and moisture-retaining keratin to protects hair damage and lock in dye.

Disappearing color? Try this cleanser.

Detergent-filled shampoos can latch on to color, washing pigments down the drain. But a cleansing conditioner, like Color Lux Color Cleansing Conditioner (Buy from Sally Beauty, $10.99), can help! Just pick the shade closest to your hair’s hue, and as it cleanses and conditions, the formula deposits a semi-permanent dye onto strands that boosts vibrancy and shine.
