If you’ve ever felt like you’re too old to change something huge about your life, you want to hear this woman’s story. Diane Naylor, now 63, retired four years ago, but what should have been a happy time left her feeling “miserable.” The reason why? She weighed more than 400 pounds.
“I felt miserable and depressed because of my weight,” Naylor told TODAY. “I wasn’t active at all and I couldn’t do all of the things I wanted to.”
Having recently moved to Oakhurst, CA, Naylor had been looking forward to the beautiful weather and hiking and biking paths nearby, but she was too big to enjoy any of it. Over the years, she had tried everything from Jenny Craig to Weight Watchers, but nothing was helping–until, shockingly, a normal night of watching TV turned into something bigger.
Naylor had been watching an episode of the TV show “Castle” when something caught her attention.
“One of the medical examiners was telling the lead actress she should follow her dreams,” Naylor said. “He pointed to the corpses and said, ‘All those people had dreams, but their time ran out, so don’t let that happen to you.’ It was like a light bulb went off — I had a lot of dreams, too, and I wanted to accomplish them.”
Powerful words–and so true! The next day, Naylor began a new weight-loss regimen, and after losing the first 50 pounds joined a Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) club, which offered meetings, phone calls, and constant support. She also started moving in small ways–like walking down the driveway to her mailbox–and gradually became more active.
Now, weighing 225 pounds less, she has words of advice for other women in her boat.
“Don’t put it off. No one gets any younger, and the younger you are, the easier it is. I started at 59, which proves anyone can do it. Why start six months from now? Start today!”
