If you’ve ever struggled with the annoyance that is eyelid twitching, you aren’t alone. Many of us will experience eyelid twitching at some point in our lives. But just because it’s common doesn’t mean that we don’t get a little worried about our vision from time to time. It’s natural to ask, Why is this happening?
Thankfully, the experts have spoken up. And as it turns out, the reason behind the nuisance actually makes a lot of sense. If the muscle in your eyelid is contracting and causing that bothersome twitch, it’s typically associated with stress or fatigue, according to optometrist Muriel Schornack. But if you’re not feeling tired or stressed out, Schornack says twitching is also common after exercising, long periods of eye strain, drinking lots of caffeine, and smoking.
The good news is that eyelid twitching is relatively harmless and will usually end on its own, according to ophthalmology instructor Dr. Payal Patel. The best way to treat it is to close your eyes when possible. You can also try applying an ice pack if that is unsuccessful.
But if the twitching persists, or if you determine it’s your eyeball twitching instead of your eyelid, it’s recommended that you see your primary care or eye doctor ASAP. Better safe than sorry!
