Keep Your Home Bug-Free All Summer with DIY Fly Paper

Tags:

Every time the weather warms up, it seems like all the pests like to welcome themselves into our homes. This year, if you’re tired of flies constantly buzzing around your abode, don’t waste money on fly traps but make your own DIY fly paper instead!

I stumbled across this easy trick years ago while scrolling around Pinterest. At first I was skeptical, but I can now finally enjoy the breeze from my open windows without worrying about the invasion of flying bugs.

Here’s what you need: Paper bags, sugar, honey, and water. Yep, that’s it! You can get fancy with twine to hang the finished product up with, but ribbon, thread, or anything that gets them dangling around the house will do fine. You can use paper bags from your grocery store, pick up a cheap pack online ($5.30, Amazon), or hit up your local craft store.

Start by cutting the paper bag into thin strips that are roughly the size of your average store-bought fly paper — about two inches wide and as long as you’d like — then make holes for whatever you’re using to hang them up with. Next, heat up about 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of honey, and a couple tablespoons of water on the stove. Once it’s all mixed together, run the strips of paper through until both sides are fully coated. Put the sugary strips on a drying rack or some place you don’t mind drips of the honey-sugar mixture falling as they dry.

Once they’ve aired out, you can hang them up wherever you have the biggest issue with bugs in your home. They will lose their stickiness over time, but you can re-coat them or just whip up a whole new batch of strips.

Now you can open your windows all summer long without fear!
